Best Buy employee gets dumped by lover, wins $30.5M

As Cher almost sang once: Do you believe in loot after love?

It's funny how the fates can bring a fetching closure to an unsuccessful relationship. Ask 22-year-old Best Buy employee Sandeep "Sunny" Singh from Hyannis, Mass.

It seems he wasn't quite so sunny when his girlfriend tossed him to other fish in the sea just two weeks ago.

And then, as CBS Boston reports, it was as if Best Buy's new Insignia Flex tablet suddenly outsold the iPad.

For Singh was rather chirping after winning $30.5 million in the lottery.

"Ahh, I'… Read more

iPhone 4S sales resume online in China, shipments by March 2

The iPhone 4S launch in China did not go quite as Apple had planned.

Throngs of people are a norm for new product launches at Apple, but the gaggle of scalpers trying to hustle the system caused Apple to delay sales, earning its stores an egg wash and plenty of animosity. Now, after implementing a lottery system for ordering the iPhone 4S, Apple has resumed selling the device online and will ship by March 2.

The lottery reservation system seems to be doing its job; scalping is on the decline and the customers who have abided by the buying policies … Read more

Yahoo awarded $610 million from lottery spammers

A judge has awarded Yahoo $610 million in a lawsuit against spammers who sent e-mails to people falsely telling them they had won a lottery prize from Yahoo.

The federal district court judge in New York ordered defendants, whom Yahoo did not identify, on Monday to pay Yahoo $27 million for trademark infringement, $583 million for violating the Can-Spam Act, and an unreleased sum for attorney's fees.

Yahoo filed the lawsuit in 2008, alleging that spammers were using the fake lottery e-mails to defraud people. The messages were designed to trick recipients into providing their bank and other information … Read more

The 404 802: Where we're breaking bread with the Gut Man (podcast)

The Audiophiliac Steve Guttenberg makes an unusual midweek appearance on today's 404 episode and as usual, the discussion topics cover Steve's audiocentric stream of consciousness with a touch of disillusionment, like a Web site that takes the creativity out of naming your band, a mask that enhances audio, the unnatural origins of 3D, and the degrading quality of CD-Rs over time.

The 404 Digest for Episode 802

Korn and Hoobastank should've used Band Name Maker. Tape Op magazine offers free subscriptions to print edition. Add Steve Guttenberg on Twitter. Check out Steve's blog on all things audio, The Audiophiliac.

iPhone SDK terms relaxed to allow lotteries (Poll)

Updated February 25, 2010 at 8:06 a.m. PST: Update and correction to reflect that the app is now free and the prize is up to $1,000 daily.

According to a report by RegHardware, Apple is now allowing developers to add contests, lotteries, or sweepstakes to iPhone and iPod Touch apps, thanks to a new SDK rule, if those contests follow some strict guidelines:

Developers must be the sole sponsor of a promotion. The app promotion must comply with all local laws. Developers must clearly state that Apple has no sponsorship or responsibility for the in-app promotion.

Questionable lotto predictions

What is there to say about Lotto007 Prediction Expert? If it really worked, do you think you'd be able to buy it on Download.com for $79? We think not. That said, we suppose that some programs of this sort are better than others, and this one does purport to actually analyze patterns in previous winning numbers in order to predict future winning combinations. We don't honestly think this program will improve your chances of winning the lottery, but it might be marginally better than some other programs.

The program's interface is plain and fairly intuitive. Users … Read more

Lottery picking helper

Lotto Pro 2009 provides the tools and charts you need to uncover lottery trends and monitor your picks. While its layout is overwhelming, its capability to dissect the lotto makes it worthwhile.

We were initially worried about this program, since its interface consisted of several cluttered buttons and a seemingly random scattering of numbers. Fortunately, a visit to the Help file's instructions and some experimenting showed us that everything had its place and offered some impressive assistance. The first thing that wowed us was its capability to pull up results for any lottery drawing in the United States and … Read more

Befuddling lotto program

PowerPlayer for Pick 3/4 2008 helps users select lottery numbers for pick-three and pick-four lotteries based on the results of previous drawings. Or at least, that's what it's supposed to do. We found the whole thing so confusing that we're not sure what, if anything, the program actually does.

The interface is a disaster, a jumble of columns, numbers, and check boxes. It was easy enough to select our local pick-three from the list of available lotteries, but after that, we were stumped. A visit to the built-in Help file was practically worthless. Even the sections … Read more
