NYC turns to pilot program for app to hail taxis

Whether people call a taxi or hail one can be a contentious matter in New York City -- because of rules set up between yellow cabs and for-hire vehicles. So, it's no surprise that a smartphone app that lets users beckon yellow cabs has been a topic of hot debate with the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission.

The commission announced Wednesday that it will vote on whether to allow such apps in a pilot program, according to the New York Times. The vote is scheduled for Thursday. Update December 13 at 10:04 a.m. PT: On … Read more

Commissioned by Limo Broker and currently in production by Carbonyte UK, the formerly two-seater Audi R8 will be stretched to accommodate six more sport bucket seats, bringing the total passenger count to eight. When it is completed, the right-hand-drive vehicle will see service in Limo Broker's fleet, which also includes a stretch Ferrari 360 Modena, in the U.K. sometime later … Read more

Correction: This story originally reported that New York City would get 100 Nissan Leafs as a demonstration fleet. The correct number is 6.

The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission has chosen Nissan's NV200 minivan to be its next taxicab, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced yesterday.

The Nissan van will join New York City's taxi fleet beginning in 2013, and be the official taxi of New York for the following 10 years. All taxis currently on the road, including the city's newer hybrid cabs, will be phased out by 2018.

Toyota debuts Swagger Wagon Supreme stretched Sienna concept

Toyota must be getting sick of people calling it dull, because for sheer absurdity, no vehicle we saw at the 2010 SEMA Show impressed like Toyota's Swagger Wagon Supreme concept. Based on the new 2011 Sienna, this stretched out concept takes moving people to the next level.

The Swagger Wagon Supreme features a wheelbase that's been stretched by 44 inches, creating much more room for people and gadgets, but essentially retaining its seven-seat configuration. From the front seats to about the tailgate, the Sienna's carpet has been replaced with wood flooring. The second row captain's chairs … Read more

Lincoln replacing Town Car with MKT livery, limo variants

The Lincoln Town Car--the gold standard of the livery and limo market--will soon be discontinued. This cancellation leaves a huge void in the fleet vehicle market that Ford-Lincoln plans to fill with a pair of Lincoln MKT variants.

The standard MKT livery variant will have its third-row seating removed and second row moved backward to increase leg room and overall comfort of passengers being shuttled about. This move will also increase rear storage space, resulting in even more cargo room than the outgoing Town Car. The livery model will be available in front- or all-wheel-drive configurations and will feature all … Read more

Cadillac One: Obama's new wheels

At next week's inauguration, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. will not only have a new resident, but also a new set of wheels in the driveway. President Barack Obama will ride in an all-new Cadillac Presidential Limousine, dubbed Cadillac One.

Inside and out, the Cadillac Presidential Limousine includes many of the brand's signature design elements, such as the dual-textured grille and the dinner plate-sized Cadillac coat-of-arms badge that are the hallmarks of the CTS sport sedan and Escalade. Vertically oriented head- and taillights mirror those used on production models. Compared with the outgoing Cadillac-supplied Presidential Limo, Cadillac One is slightly … Read more
