The National Security Agency, along with its UK counterpart, the GCHQ, has taken to video games to spy on alleged terrorists, according to a new report.
The Guardian reported on Monday that leaked documents obtained from Edward Snowden show that the NSA several years ago determined that online games could be a breeding ground for terrorist activity. In response, the US and UK set out a plan to monitor activity on popular games, World of Warcraft and Second Life. Xbox Live gaming was also targeted in that effort.… Read more
It isn't just the big phone makers that are jumping into the oversize smartphone, or phablet, market. Lesser-known companies are entering the huge-screen scrum too. For example, the $299 Life View from Miami-based handset creator Blu features a 5.7-inch LCD screen that's bright, colorful, and engaging. The device is a handful too, in the same size league as the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and HTC One Max, and yet isn't terribly unwieldy. It also feels solid and well-crafted. I also appreciate how the Life View serves up Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and a sharp 12-megapixel … Read more
How do surgeons, choreographers, mountain climbers, and little kids tap into Apple's tablet? Apple wants us to know.
A new promo page dubbed "Life in iPad" highlights iPad users from around the world to show us that the tablet is good for a lot more than just playing games and checking e-mail. The video takes us on a tour of the iPad at work, showing its adoption by a wind turbine technician, a farm worker, a professional speedskater, an underwater sea diver, a vineyard owner, an off-road race car driver, a firefighter, a choreographer, a surgeon, and finally a mountain climber.… Read more
At Intel's investor day meeting Thursday, an executive cited Apple as the primary force behind the chipmaker's push for big improvements in battery life.
"We're extremely excited about the MacBook Air," said Kirk Skaugen, senior vice president of Intel's PC Client Group.
"Essentially, cooperating with Apple doubled the battery life from generation to generation -- from 6 to 12.5 hours on the MacBook Air," he said.
CNET Reviews said that the battery life on the 2013 MacBook Air with Intel's Haswell processor is "astonishing."
"The previous-generation 13-inch … Read more

Owners of Microsoft's Surface Pro 2 tablet should get more pep out of the battery courtesy of a recent update.
On October 25, Microsoft released a firmware and driver pack for the Surface Pro 2. One of the goals of the update was to reduce the battery juice required by the Wi-Fi hardware. And Microsoft seems to have succeeded in that area.
Running a series of battery tests, tech review site Anandtech found that the tablet now lasts for more than 8 hours while browsing the Web via a Wi-Fi connection. That number represents an almost 25 percent jump … Read more
At Apple's live event earlier this week, iWork and iLife users were given a treat: free upgrades to major new versions of the company's productivity and lifestyle apps.
The move, which follows one the company made last month on its mobile platform iOS, is part of a broader effort to offer many of its paid software apps for free.
But, according to some longtime users, the new versions of the apps are a step backwards in functionality. Many have taken to Apple's official support forum to air their grievances.
Among the features users say are missing from … Read more
I am all for freedom of association.
Conventional wisdoms about relationships so often turn out to be unwise, so if older men wish to date younger women or vice versa, I wish them every fortune.
In Australia, however, certain apparatchiks seem averse to older women being portrayed as having more foxy and more moxie than their younger counterparts.
The nation's Advertising Standards Board has banned an ad for a dating site called CougarLife.com.
As its name rather implies, this is a site where younger men pursue older women. At least, I think it's that way around.

Microsoft mouthpiece Frank Shaw penned a blog post Wednesday about Apple's new iPad, which for the first time comes with free iWork and iLife software. Shaw's post is titled "Apple and oranges," but it appears to also include some sour grapes.
Microsoft has taken the iPad to task since the introduction of its own Surface tablet, pointing to features like the Surface's optional keyboard-type covers and built-in Office software as things that set the Microsoft slate apart. Now that Apple has addressed some of that criticism by introducing free iWork and iLife, Microsoft is still … Read more
