All-new Lexus IS to debut in Detroit; what should we expect?

Lexus has announced that it will be pulling the wraps off of the all-new IS at the 2013 North American International Auto Show--better known to those of us car guys and gals as the Detroit Auto Show. The automaker has stated that the new model "has been completely redesigned, inside and out" and will be inspired by the LF-CC Coupe Concept (which we saw make its own debut at the 2012 Paris Auto Show) and the brand's LFA halo car.

Beyond that, the automaker hasn't said anything else about the new IS. So, exactly what should … Read more

2012 Lexus LFA: A wet first drive

As I accelerated out of the rain-slicked Turn 2 of Infineon Raceway, I could feel the rear end of the Lexus LFA begin to slip and spin. "Holy crap," I thought, "how am I going to be able to pay for this $375,000 Lexus?"

Fortunately, my moment of terror was, despite the slippery conditions, both brief and isolated. But before I get into that, let's discuss how I came to find myself on a wet racetrack behind the most exotic vehicle to ever come out of Japan.

Artist renders next-gen Toyota Supra concept

We know that the Toyota Sprinter Trueno (AE86) will be getting a spiritual successor in whatever vehicle comes out of the other end of the development of the FT-86 concept. However, although Toyota fanatics have been howling for a replacement for the Supra for much longer, Toyota hasn't openly committed to plans to revive its former halo car. That doesn't stop talented artists from taking their own cracks at designing the next Toyota Supra.

Quelle surprise! Lexus promotes LFA using swimsuit model

Yesterday, we saw Nissan promoting its Juke by pitting the cute 'ute against a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model in a series of challenges. Today, we have Lexus promoting its LFA supercar by doing donuts around--you guessed it--a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model.

The video below features champion drifter Rhys Millen discussing the power and control that the LFA enables and photographer Yu Tsai explaining how it was used to create the perfect shot for the 2011 SI Swimsuit Issue. But let's be honest, it's really just a thinly veiled excuse to power slide a bright yellow supercar around supermodel … Read more

Lexus LFA owners get 'warm welcome' in Web video

Owners of Lexus LFAs are welcomed into the family by Lexus General Manager Mark Templin in this Web video.

Although the video doesn't show the LFA in action, it does show off some of the highlights of the supercar.

Only 500 units will be made over a two-year period, and dealers were apparently told the $375,000 vehicles were only to go to the most elite drivers.

The 4.8L V10 engine boasts 552 horsepower and goes 0 to 60 in 3.6 seconds, with a top speed of 202 mph.

In a separate video on YouTube, Lexus shows … Read more

Lexus LFA to feature new 'Airbelt,' a seat belt airbag

The Lexus LFA, which is available this month, will feature new inflatable seat belt technology.

The Takata "Airbelt," or SRS Seat Belt Airbag, is built into the webbing of the seat belt. It's designed to protect drivers and front-seat passengers in front- or side-impact collisions.

From the looks of it, and a description of how it works, the airbag will fill up with air on impact. It looks strikingly similar to the inflatable rear seat belts revealed last summer from Ford for the 2011 Ford Explorer.

The belt expands directly to spread the shock-load over a wider … Read more

Lexus supercar versus a Champagne flute

The car company better known for reliability than high-performance engineering released a commercial for its sold-out Lexus LFA in which the 552-horsepower exotic sports car shatters a champagne flute with the sound of its exhaust alone.

"The glass is actually broken by the precision sound of the vehicle," said Dave Nordstrom, vice president of marketing for Lexus. "We wanted to show just how deep our pursuit of perfection and commitment to innovation goes. The LFA was designed to deliver its own unique exhaust note, and this illustrates that beautifully."

The commercial was recorded in a sound … Read more

Lexus LX 570: A 2010 Gas Guzzler

A couple of weeks ago, Lexus made headlines with the unveiling of its first official "supercar" at the 2009 SEMA show in Las Vegas. Matte black Lexus LF-A is stealthy super car

Lexus' booth at the SEMA show was very small and very hard to find, but it was well worth seeking for one very good reason: the $400k, 550-horsepower Lexus LF-A.
