Cutting tool gadget thinks outside the plastic wrap box

Leftovers. There are always leftovers. Obviously, dealing with leftovers is a nice problem to have. With a quick peek into the fridge, yesterday's meal can quickly become today's snack. But it's getting them into the fridge that's the hard part. There are storage containers in every shape and size, yet somehow that never seems to fully save all the leftovers. Enter plastic wrap. That is, enter plastic wrap everywhere: shredded pieces on the counter, balled-up rejects in the trash, and misshapen mistakes trying to cover food.

Wrestling with plastic wrap is one of those first-world problems … Read more

Storage containers are leftovers' best friend

I'm already looking forward to my favorite part of Thanksgiving: leftovers. The days immediately following Turkey Day are filled with delicious morsels of every imaginable color, shape, size, texture and most importantly, taste. We will ponder sandwich combinations that aren't seen any other time of year. A mashed potato, turkey, and cranberry sandwich topped with a glazed carrot drizzle? Sure, why not? One can only eat so many plates with nicely compartmentalized leftovers. Sometimes the party just has to come together. (Note to self: This year find something to mix in with that all-too-familiar green bean casserole).

DaysAgo Timers keeps track of your leftovers

I can see the potential for overuse here. Imagine walking into a home and finding these little timers all over the place, on everything. I can see it. In fact, I can see implementing it. It might be a better approach than my current yellow sticky system, where the ubiquitous pieces of paper are indeed ubiquitous; they are everywhere.

However, one corner of my kitchen is devoid of reminder notes, and that would be inside the fridge. I just haven't found a good way to keep them stuck as I shuffle things around in there. As I move the … Read more

Ceiva playing at a fridge near you

Having conquered the living rooms of grandparents everywhere, Ceiva's digital photo frames have set their sights on a new target--the refrigerator door. As ridiculous as that might sound, it's really the next logical step in kitchen-media convergence: We've already seen a steady rise in fridge TVs from Samsung, LG and other manufacturers, after all.

Ceiva's partnership is with Whirlpool, a deal that makes sense because of the appliance maker's "Centralpark Connection" networked line of iceboxes; Ceiva provides slide shows received by online feeds, so it's a natural fit. The Whirpool frames will … Read more

The microwave as a lethal weapon

Microwave ovens have been used to heat corn dogs melt toys. Now, two inventors want to employ them to liquidate an enemy in battle.

In an application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, two inventors say they have come up with a way to get the magnetrons, the device inside microwave ovens that turns electrical energy into microwaves, to essentially synchronize.

Right now, the largest magnetrons can crank out about 1 megawatt. That's a lot of power, but the device is expensive and delicate. By getting off-the-shelf magnetrons to lock into the same frequency and phase, you … Read more
