Mitsubishi Lancer SE offers four-wheel drive on the cheap

I figured it would be a slow week when Mitsubishi delivered to the CNET garage a 2013 Lancer with neither an Evo nor Ralliart badge. The rally star Lancer Evo is a glorious little street-fighter, while the Ralliart version is almost as good.

But this 2013 Lancer SE showed me a couple of tricks that ultimately made for some fun driving adventures.

Bargain four-wheel drive Among Mitsubishi's limited line of vehicles, the Lancer is the stalwart -- an economy car offered in multiple trims, and with some tech options. The Lancer SE delivered to CNET was a midtrim model, … Read more

Learning to drive faster at the Simraceway Lancer Evolution Experience

The best mod that you can make to improve the performance of any car doesn't happen in the engine bay or in the wheel wells. It happens in the cabin; and I'm not talking about a stereo upgrade, a Momo steering wheel, or racing bucket seats. I'm talking about boosting the performance of the boob sitting in the driver's seat. Improving your skill as a driver will allow you to pull the most performance out of any mod that you make to the car you're currently driving and it's transferable to any other car … Read more

For Mitsubishi, the Outlander's sportiness is measured in mpgs

Try as we might, it's impossible for any car guy or gal to settle behind the wheel of a vehicle with zero expectations. So, when the 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport arrived in the Car Tech garage with its athletic good looks, a "Sport" pedigree, and all-wheel driven Lancer underpinnings, we found ourselves briefly fantasizing about Lancer Sportback Ralliart-class handling and power. As you'll see in the full review, we got a serious reality check within the first few miles behind the wheel, thanks in no small part to the continuously variable transmission that sits between … Read more

Video: World's fastest donuts

By world's fastest donuts, we don't mean delicious pastries moving at a high rate of speed. We're referring to this video of Russ Swift's Guiness World Record for spinning his Lancer Evolution through ten 360 degree turns in just over 16 seconds.

If the name Russ Swift sounds familiar, it should. He's also got records for the tightest/fastest parallel park and quickest J-turn, which are also shown in the the clip below.

Is there anything the Mitsubishi Lancer can't do?

Mitsubishi announced today that it will enter a modified Lancer in next year's Dakar rally, the legendary grueling race through Africa. The base model Lancer is a small economy car with not much pep but a good cabin tech package, seemingly a poor platform for this tough race. However, Mitsubishi has been proving for years with the Lancer Evo, a heavily modified version of the car, that it can win World Rally Car races. The newest version, the Evo X, impressed the heck out of us on the track at Laguna Seca in Monterey, Calif., earlier this year. Mitsubishi … Read more
