Kohjinsha's doublewide laptop display

CHIBA, Japan--This otherwise run-of-the-mill laptop from local PC purveyor Kohjinsha has not one, but two widescreen displays.

One of the 10.1-inch screens actually slides behind the other, so it's able to be closed like a normal laptop. When they slideout they form an admittedly odd-looking, but useful dual display setup.

Also inside the laptop: a 1.6 Ghz AMD Athlon Neo-MV40, 4GB of memory, Bluetooth, a TV tuner, and a biometric fingerprint reader. The OS will be Windows 7 Home Premium, graphics are DirectX 10 compatible, and the whole thing weighs about 4 pounds. More photos of the sliding screens in action after the jump.… Read more

Kohjinsha Netbook goes really tiny

While the Netbook industry is heading for larger screen sizes, Kohjinsha seems to be interested in a different trend. Known for making low-cost convertible tablets with 7- to 9-inch screen sizes, the Japanese maker's latest model is a notebook with a tiny 4.8-inch touch screen.

Running on an off-roadmap Intel Atom N510 1.1GHz processor, the Kohjinsha PM series targets users who demand a full Windows operating system literally in the palm of their hands. The 12-ounce minilaptop is almost pocket-size, with a footprint of about 6.2 inches by 3.7 inches by less than an inch, … Read more

Kohjinsha + Bandai = Netbook for kids

What do a Japanese notebook maker and toy manufacturer have in common? Nothing until recently, when Kohjinsha and Bandai teamed up to ride the Netbook popularity wave that's seen almost every major laptop vendor sport one in their stable.

The Gachapin & Mukku Netbook has one interesting twist. It's a limited edition, and it's aimed at kids using cartoon characters (a dinosaur and a bigfoot) that Japanese tots are familiar with. Slated for a March rollout at 79,800 yen ($878), this is no toy, however. In fact, the pricing hardly falls into the Netbook comfort zone. … Read more

Kohjinsha offers new tablet PCs in Japan

Kohjinsha made a name for itself by offering one of the most affordable convertible tablet PCs in the market. Its most recent lines, the SC and SX series, now come equipped with the latest Atom processors.

The SC range is an upgrade from the older SH series, choosing portability over an integrated optical drive. The 7-inch screen has a 1,024 x 600 resolution, with the main changes being its 1.33GHz Atom chip and the addition of an ExpressCard/34 slot. The Japanese model comes with an integrated 1Seg TV tuner, which will likely be removed when it hits … Read more

New UMPC priced to sell in Asia

When the Kohjinsha SA1 was released outside Japan, it made waves as the first UMPC priced as low as $658. Though the coming of the cheaper ASUS Eee PC has stolen the former's thunder, we were still excited to see the SA1's successor as it could well be the cheapest Vista UMPC in the market (ASUS is based on Linux).

We played around with the new Kohjinsha SH6 display unit and were impressed that the Japanese company actually listened to consumer feedback. The keyboard is now head and shoulders above the SA1. The screen can be rotated with … Read more
