Apple could face a fight over the 'iTV' brand--should it go that way

Should Apple use the "iTV" moniker for its widely expected smart TV, it may entangle the company in a legal mess. Or it may not.

British TV network ITV has reportedly warned Apple not to use the brand name iTV for its upcoming smart TV product. The U.K. broadcaster may have even received assurances from Apple in 2010 that the iPhone maker would not christen any upcoming TV products with the iTV name.

At least, that's the scoop according to the U.K. Telegraph.

But ITV is denying the report, claiming it's had no such … Read more

Why an Apple HDTV is a huge risk

With the release of Steve Jobs' biography this week, it seems that the man's final desire was to build an Apple television.

His biographer, Walter Isaacson, wrote that Jobs had the idea of a simple interface cracked, but then told CNET that the product was not "close at all" and "very theoretical." This hasn't stopped analysts from leaping over each other to pinpoint the TV's launch date (late 2012? early 2013?) in some kind of "guess the number of jelly beans" competition, especially after the news that the creator of iTunes was heading up a team to produce it. Even the New York Times has chimed in today saying that it really is coming, honest.

But is a full-fledged Apple HDTV a good idea?… Read more

Terrible TV

The idea of watching TV on your computer is an enticing one, and it's made sites like Hulu, which streams television content online, very popular. Unfortunately, iTV Media Player is something else entirely. It's really little more than a clunky browser with advertising, and we're not sure why anyone would want to use it.

The program's interface is plain and doesn't immediately make sense; we weren't sure how to find the actual content. Eventually we figured out that all iTV Media Player does is link to six sites--Veetle, TikiLIVE, DirectOn, Justin.tv, NexUSAtv, and … Read more

On today's show, you can finally tell people that you read Playboy for the articles ... and have it be the truth! At least if you shell out $5 for the Playboy iPad app. Also, Oracle sues Google over Android, and it doesn't look good for Google. Plus, the brewing Apple vs. BBC cage match. Report: Joost CEO Mike Volpi a candidate for ITV job

Joost may be in for more bad news, as a report out of Great Britain says Mike Volpi, CEO of the video site, is a candidate to take over as chief executive of ITV.

ITV is a British public service network and a BBC competitor. British newspaper The Sunday Times reported that Volpi is among a small group of candidates scheduled to be interviewed over the next two weeks.

The report comes two months after CNET News reported that Joost was shopping itself to cable companies. One of the companies that made inquiries was Time Warner. Joost, created by the … Read more

Tragedy! Susan Boyle clip not making anyone money

You wept for Susan Boyle.

Now prepare your finest large-mouthed, water-loving reptile tears for those who have so far failed to make money out of her astoundingly popular YouTube video.

It seems that British channel ITV, which is graced by "Britain's Got Talent," failed to reach agreement with YouTube over advertising. So the clip of the sublime Ms. Boyle continues to run with no advertising gracing its hem.

It is touching that while Susan Boyle tries to hang on to her authentic humanity, these two commercial entities are tightening their jaws like large men in a night … Read more

What's on TV?

i.TV is an incredibly useful free app for anyone who loves watching movies and TV shows. It has a very simple interface, divided up into TV, movies, a global search function, and "My Media" (basically, favorites and a set of listings for browsing genres, TV channels, and your Netflix queue). With a few taps, you can find out what's currently playing on a particular TV channel (you pick the broadcast or cable provider), watch previews and check showtimes at your local theaters, add movies to your Netflix queue (including your instant watching queue), and even read … Read more

i.TV's iPhone app gets deep Netflix integration

On Monday i.TV, the movie and TV show listing service for the iPhone, pushed out a really neat update that marries the idea of its live content guide with services that can take advantage of it as a platform.

The first service to be introduced into the mix is Netflix. I.TV users who are also Netflix subscribers can manage their queue right from the application, as well as start Netflix searches from i.TV's own listings.

An example of how this might work is if you're perusing the latest movie listings. If you see a film … Read more

iPhone apps of the week

Before I unveil this week's iPhone apps, I wanted to see if anyone else had the same iPhone problem I have. I keep having this issue with iPhone app updates that won't finish downloading and demand that I connect to iTunes to finish the update. But even when connected to iTunes, not all of the apps update and I'm left with that number on my home screen saying I need to update when I've done everything I can to complete the process. I also get some update notices dated before I downloaded the app, which clearly … Read more
