It looks like a good weekend for iPhone 5 deals

If you're in the market for an iPhone 5, this weekend might be the time to plunk down your greenies and grab one. Several deals on the gadget kicked in recently.

Walmart has, as of Saturday, permanently dropped the price of the 16GB iPhone 5 to $130, a drop of 60 smackers. That's in-store only and requires a two-year contract with Sprint, Verizon, or AT&T. The price of the 4S has also dipped -- down 50 bucks, to $40.

If AT&T is your carrier of choice, you can take advantage of its half-off arrangement, … Read more

iPhone 6: Most-wanted features

The next iPhone -- or iPhones -- will most likely be released this fall, about a year after the iPhone 5 made its debut.

Will it be called the iPhone 6? Probably not. Rumor has it that Apple most likely will trot out the iPhone 5S, which will look cosmetically the same as the iPhone 5 but have some upgrades on the inside (see our regularly updated iPhone 5S rumor roundup page to get the latest dish).

But whatever it is called, I do have a wish list of what I'd like it to have.

Apple looking at 5.7-inch iPhone, claims report

Apple is exploring iPhones as large as 5.7 inches, as it feels the heat from large-screen rivals, according to Reuters.

The company is considering the introduction of "at least two bigger iPhones next year," the report said.

One could sport a 4.7-inch screen and the other a 5.7-incher, Reuters said, citing sources in the Asia supply chain.

"Suppliers have been approached with plans for the larger screens," the report claimed, adding that the move is "still under discussion."

The motive appears to be a growing need to respond to large-screen smartphones … Read more

Rumor Has It: Time to preorder your Apple iWatch

Dear Rumor fans,

Don't cry for me, readers, just because I am moving away from you and my partner in rumor sleuthing, Karyne Levy, to voluntarily shovel snow in Massachusetts for the rest of my life.

OK, cry a little bit (aww shucks, guys, I'm going to miss you, too!) but then dry those tears and rejoice because Rumor Has It is continuing on without me. And it's going to grow and change and highlight all the amazing talent CNET has to offer and make me so proud.

The concept for Rumor Has It popped into my … Read more

iPhone 5S, 5-inch iPhone 6 allegedly spotted at supplier

The much-rumored iPhone 5S and a 5-inch iPhone 6 have shown up at an Apple supplier in China, according to a post on a Chinese microblogging site.

The models could be released this year, according to a post by a Sina Tech user called Old Yao. He reports that a friend of his at a supplier has seen the models and says that the iPhone 5S resembles the iPhone 5, while the iPhone 6 is wider, longer, and thinner.

CNET has contacted Apple for comment and will update this report when we learn more.

As Apple gets closer to an … Read more

Rumor: 4.8-inch iPhone to debut in June

The rumors are afloat about a bigger iPhone, one that could be more competitive with the popular Samsung Galaxy S III and other larger smartphones. The rumor alludes to a 4.8-inch iPhone, perhaps iPhone 6, to be unveiled at Apple's June 2013 Worldwide Developer's Conference.

Below is a Google translation from the Chinese language Commercial Times, which published the story on the possible next-generation iPhone:

Apple phone must land big counter-offensive, the industry pointed out that, led by "Californian" models iPhone new machine (tentative name the iPhone 5s and the iPhone the Math) leader, will … Read more

The iPhone 6 won't wow: 6 reasons why

Apple's getting hammered by analysts and investors as I write this, and I've been trying to resist the urge to say "told ya so."

Sorry, no will power today.

Back in September, after the much-awaited and meh-filled unveiling of the iPhone 5, I made a declaration that's being borne out further in this week's headlines -- the iPhone jumped the shark some time ago. At the time, I was reacting to the lack of any groundbreaking innovation in the latest Apple smartphone iteration. But this week, word came that iPhone demand was slumping and Apple had reportedly cut component orders.

Is that really such a big deal, you say? No, not necessarily. It could just be the normal drop in sales after the holidays. Or it could be that, plus the six reasons below that lead me to continue to believe that the iPhone will join Adam Lambert, Sarah Palin, and many others on the list of pop culture icons that peaked around 2010. … Read more

Developer log points ahead to next iPhone, iOS

The next iPhone and its accompanying iOS 7 software have apparently turned up in developer logs, indicating that the next-generation phone is already in the testing stages.

The log, shown off to The Next Web, highlights the code "iPhone 6,1". The iPhone 5 -- Apple's current flagship -- bears the moniker iPhone5,1 or 5,2 in the logs, suggesting that this is indeed the next generation of phone.

Without any further details however, it's impossible to judge whether the phone is a complete overhaul in the form of an iPhone 6, or whether it … Read more

Top 5 features missing from iPhone 5

The iPhone 5 has arrived, and it's pretty great. But I can't shake this nagging feeling that Apple could have done more.

A week ago, CNET's David Carnoy penned a great roundup of the most-wanted features that didn't make it into the iPhone 5. It seemed like easy pickings for a Top 5 video, so I imposed a ranking, stood in front of a camera, and created the video you see before you (click here if you don't see a video at the top of this … Read more

Teen's iPhone 5 concept video sets high bar

A faux iPhone 5 commercial apparently created by a 17-year-old from Oklahoma with some serious video production chops sets a pretty high bar for the much-anticipated next-generation smartphone.

This short video from Dakota Adney, who lists his location as a small town near Tulsa, imagines a new iPhone with iOS 6, a quad-core A5 chip, a see-through Retina Display, and a virtual projected keyboard to provide much-needed relief for the fat-thumbed.… Read more
