YourLife.tv

Justin.tv has come a long way since founder Justin Kan walked around broadcasting the events of his life 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In truth, "YourLife.tv" would be a more accurate name for the live broadcasting service that bears Kan's name. The app lets you view live streams and broadcast your own from the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and new iPod Touch over Wi-Fi, 3G, and EDGE.

The overhauled iPhone app boasts an intuitive design, especially on the video broadcast side, which features onscreen icons to start and end broadcasts, title the … Read more

The VoIP original

Skype's official iPhone app is one way to climb aboard the VoIP calling (and IM) train Skype from the iPhone. Skype for iPhone has always let you place free 3G calls to other Skype users, and low-price calls to cell phones and landlines around the world. Version 2.0 at long last introduces support for making calls over the 3G data network. Call quality will depend on your data or Wi-Fi connection, though we found that Skype's audio can be clearer than with conventional calls, especially internationally. Since that isn't always the case, an improved quality meter … Read more

Like a rock

Don't expect Firebox to pamper you with frilly icons and pretty formats. It's just not that kind of digital vault. Ask for nothing other than a master password, a straightforward format, and encryption from Firebox, and you'll get along fine. The lock box gives you a few data categories and samples to get started, like entries for your computer log-in and Web site details. You can also start it up with a blank database and build your own entries from scratch. Searching and sorting your database is also in the cards. Web URLs now trigger Safari to … Read more

The days of our iPhone updates...

These are the days I dread, but like in some sense. Release day for an iPhone firmware update. This always happens: I'm on my way out the door to work and want to synch my iPhone just to update any playlists or iCal entries when "BAM" - an update is available, "would you like to download now?" iTunes asks invitingly.

Of course I do, even though I have no idea what the difference between 2.0.1 to 2.0.2 is, it's just that it's better, right? (I would hope so, but … Read more

Report: iPhone app crash fix coming next month

Apple has reportedly acknowledged the fact that many third-party iPhone applications have been crashing on launch, according to AppleInsider.

One of AppleInsider's readers says that after he contacted Apple about the problem, he received a response from CEO Steve Jobs himself: "This is a known iPhone bug that is being fixed in the next software update in September."

Apple representatives did not immediately have confirmation.

That was the full extent of Jobs' e-mail, AppleInsider said. While the most talked-about mobile-software problems for Apple right now are still the issues with MobileMe, crashing apps have been causing a … Read more

Gartner: iPhone 2.0 cuts business mustard

Apple's iPhone 3G is fit for business use, according to analyst house Gartner.

But interested parties should approach adoption slowly, with Gartner warning that there are various "inconveniences" to consider, such as the iPhone's relatively poor battery performance--and the thorny issue of dealing with iTunes in the enterprise.

Earlier this year the analyst firm said it would be giving businesses the green light to use the device in a limited capacity after Apple detailed enterprise-friendly changes that would arrive with iPhone 2.0, such as support for Microsoft Exchange push e-mail.

The new firmware arrived with … Read more

iPhone 2.0 update wreaks havoc on 1st-gen devices

Several bloggers and readers are reporting that when they tried to update the firmware on their iPhones Friday, the devices were "bricked," or rendered unusable.

CNET Blog Network contributor Matt Asay reported around 7 a.m. PDT Friday that when he attempted to use iTunes to update his iPhone, he got an error message and his phone stopped working. He says he can't access contacts or make calls.

CNET News reader Peter8105 reported the same thing Friday morning. Blogger Dave Winer posted the error message he got to his Flickr page Friday morning, and complained of the … Read more

Software update gives new life to the first iPhone

Although Friday's launch of the iPhone 3G is grabbing all the headlines, there's no need to put the original iPhone out to pasture just yet.

With the iPhone 2.0 software update, the first iPhone is getting another day in the sun, and it's a nice toasty sunshine at that. Although Apple has yet to release the update officially--it should happen Friday as well--the software became available on Thursday through the magic of the Internet.

As we reported during Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference last month, the 2.0 software update adds a number of important featuresRead more

WordPress to release iPhone app

When the iPhone App Store was mentioned in Steve Jobs' WWDC keynote, one of the many applications announced was a TypePad blogging tool, courtesy of Six Apart (The company also makes two other blogging tools; Movable Type and Vox). Now that the App Store has launched, other blogging platforms like WordPress are coming forward with their own iPhone app plans.

Today, WordPress put out a video demonstrating its very own iPhone blogging tool, which supports WordPress.com blogs and self-hosted WordPress.org blogs (as long as it's version 2.5.1 or later). WordPress promises the iPhone app will … Read more

Hands-on: iTunes Remote App

We've had a few minutes to play with the Remote App (download) for the iPhone. The (not surprising) verdict? It's an easy must-have for any iPhone or iPod Touch owner who enjoys listening to music at home.

Once you've upgraded your iPhone (or Touch) to version 2.0, just go to the App Store and search on "remote." (Amazingly, that--not "iRemote"--is the program's official name.) You can download it straight to the phone over a Wi-Fi connection (tap the word "free" on the upper right corner), and it auto-installs, adding a new icon to your home screen. … Read more
