Best iPad 3 cases and covers

The new iPad -- or the iPad 3, as I incorrectly like to call it -- has been out for a while, but the new cases keep on coming.

If you've already seen an older version of this list, I apologize, but the good news is that it's been updated.

As most people know, Apple barely changed the design of the third-generation iPad and a lot of existing iPad 2 cases fit the iPad 3. While a few of those iPad 2 models are represented in this round of top cases and covers, I did my best to include plenty of new models, as many accessory makers have refreshed their lines in the last few months. … Read more

Lifeproof expands colors for iPhone case, shows iPad case

The folks from Lifeproof stopped by our office in New York and gave us a peek at some upcoming products, including new colors for its fast-selling $80 waterproof iPhone 4/4S case, a flotation accessory, and its much-anticipated waterproof iPad case, which is due to arrive in August and will fit both the iPad 2 and third-generation iPad.

The new iPhone cases are due to arrive in the next few weeks, though the orange and lime green cases (on the right) will be delayed a bit. The new cases will retail for the same price as the current Lifeproof cases (… Read more

Apple debuts front-and-back iPad Smart Case

As anyone who bought an iPad Smart Cover knows it doesn't protect the back of your iPad. But now Apple is giving iPad owners an official Apple case that offers both front and back protection: the iPad Smart Case.

The Smart Case retails for $49, comes in six colors, and is compatible with the iPad 2 and the new iPad. At launch, there's no deluxe leather option; this one's made from polyurethane.

Here's what Apple has to say about it:

The iPad Smart Case covers your iPad -- both front and back -- yet still retains … Read more

Otterbox getting an early jump on iPad 3 case

Well, here it is. The first e-mail for a case for the iPad 3.

It comes courtesy of Otterbox, which is getting a jump on its competitors and is already asking media members to line up for review samples of its new Defender Series case. (Average civilians can sign up to receive an e-mail alert when the new case launches). … Read more

BinderPad iPad holder clips into three-ring binder

It's a simple idea: an iPad holder that fits in a three-ring binder. Now you can carry your tablet computer like the paper it ostensibly replaces.

Or, to put it another way, you can spend $1.99 at your local office supply store and get a serviceable protective case for your iPad (once you've laid out the $29.99 for the binder-ready holder).

BinderPad is a slim polyester cover for your iPad. A tab along one edge has three grommets spaced to fit a standard three-ring binder. BinderPad's maker, ZooGue, is pitching the holder to students who are required to use tablet computers instead of textbooks.… Read more

Timbuk2 Pop-Up case fits both iPad and iPad 2

With a lot of people buying Apple's magnetic Smart Cover to go along with their new iPad 2's, many iPad accessory case makers are starting to tout the ability of their sleeve-style cases to accommodate the iPad 2 with that Smart Cover left on. The idea, of course, is that when you travel, you'll want a little more protection for your precious Apple tablet, and the sleeve is the perfect way to completely cover your iPad 2.

Timbuk2's upcoming Pop-Up case is kind of a hybrid sleeve/hard case, with a rigid front for added protection, … Read more

Maclove's Apple cases send a message

Ever since Steve Jobs pulled out a MacBook Air from a manila envelope at a Macworld keynote address in 2008, a few accessory makers have been inspired to design leather manila envelope cases for the Air. Well, we noticed that a company called Maclove has gone a step further and designed a whole line of "Messager" leather manila cases for Mac products.

We had a little trouble finding Messager cases for sale online, but the iPad version appears to cost about $50 (shipping not included). If this style suits your fancy, Amazon does have a number of manila-style … Read more

CES: iPad case with built-in keyboard (podcast)

Accessory Workshop used CES to debut a new version of the tyPad, an innovative iPad case with a built-in rubberized keyboard that connects to the iPad via Bluetooth.

The $114.95 case, which is not much thicker than many other iPad cases, also serves as a stand, putting the iPad into an excellent position for typing. Although some touch typists may have a bit of trouble using the keyboard, which is smaller than a standard desktop or laptop keyboard, I found it easier to type on than the virtual keyboard on the iPad screen.

JavoEdge's Editor Axis case for iPad improves on a good thing

A few months ago I wrote about the JavoEdge Axis case for iPad. Because I'd been looking for cases that combine decent protection with the ability to prop your iPad up at various angles--and that includes placing the iPad in a portrait or landscape position--I thought it was one of the best iPad cases out there. But I also said it wasn't perfect and had a few small issues. Well, the company took that feedback--and the feedback from customers--and redesigned the case, calling the new version the Editor Axis case.

On the JavoEdge blog, we found this recent post: … Read more

Is this the best iPad case?

A few of us here at CNET have been fiddling around with various iPad cases, trying to find ones to recommend to readers. I've been personally looking for cases that combine decent protection with the ability to prop your iPad up at various angles--and that includes placing the iPad in a portrait or landscape position.

While the JavoEdge Axis series isn't quite perfect, there's a lot to like about it. For starters, the model I tested, the Fiber Axis, has a clean, modern design that's eye-catching (it at least impressed editor Dan Ackerman, which is hard … Read more
