Indian Chrome

Can you name the largest English-speaking nation? It's not the USA; it's India. Hindi is India's official language, but English is its secondary official language, reflecting its importance as a common language of business and contact in an emerging tech powerhouse with more than a billion citizens who speak dozens of languages and dialects. Indian Dictionary for Chrome from TechRaga is a free Google Chrome plug-in that adds support for India's major languages: Hindi, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telgu, and English.

As with most Chrome add-ins, Indian Dictionary is extremely small, only 26.31KB--smaller than … Read more

PetroAlgae signs deal with Indian Oil

PetroAlgae has signed a memorandum of understanding to license its proprietary technology for producing and harvesting algae for fuel to Indian Oil, the company announced this week.

The Melbourne, Fla.-based company has developed bioreactors and harvesting methods for converting algae grown in open-pond freshwater farms into biodiesel.

The first phase of its partnership with Indian Oil will involve building a test facility to see whether PetroAlgae's production method is scalable. Once that has proven to be successful, Indian Oil plans to build a commercial production facility that could produce 200,000 tpa (tonnes per annum) of biodiesel. That … Read more

Basic Vedic charts

MB Vedic Astrology Divisional Charts provides users with their Rashi and Divisional charts. Users who are already familiar with Vedic astrology may find this useful, but novices are likely to be confused by the program's lack of explanation.

Like other Mystic Board software, the first screen is a mess of Mystic Board advertising. After that, the interface is basic and moderately attractive. Users enter information about the time and place of their birth, and the program then provides the charts, as well as Vedic details and planetary positions. Although the program does explain what various aspects of the chart … Read more

Astrology tool

MB Tamil Astrology provides users with a tool for determining their future and characteristics using the Tamil form of readings. While it gets off to a rocky start, the program eventually leads to an excellent showcase of signs and lucky days.

The program's interface is a mixed bag. Its simple use of colors is matched by its simple interface and users can easily navigate through the screen that requests personal information (though the longitude and latitude of birth proves challenging and a little confusing). From there, users are treated to tabs that dictate their astrology on the proceeding screen. … Read more

The 404 201: Where MTI is the new Wilson

To continue a week of absences, Wilson is on leave, so MTI once again picks up the mantle and joins us for today's episode. Dan the Mantern kindly filled in the board with stories about magical baked goods, lightbulb-powered Wi-Fi, 11 TRILLION dollar shots at evolution, and a bunch of '80s movies that should not, but will be, remade.

Wow, I can't believe it's been 201 episodes already, it seems like just yesterday that the guys invited me into the studio for my first guest appearance on the show, and now I'm a permanent host! To support our efforts to keep our heads barely above water, I'd like to personally invite you to join The 404 for drinks this Friday, October 10 at Gstaad Bar on West 26th St. and 6th Avenue @ 6:30PM. Jeff, Wilson, MTI, Natali, and I will all be there in the flesh to meet all four of you guys that listen to the show and live in New York. So come out, we'll buy you a drink (scratch that, reverse it) and we'll all have a great time. Don't forget, because we definitely won't if you miss it!

Indian outsourcing feels credit-crunch squeeze

Indian outsourcing companies are likely to be affected by the economic downturn in the U.S., an Indian trade body has warned.

The National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom) said on Tuesday that the continuing "turmoil" in the U.S. financial markets would be likely to have a negative effect on Indian business process outsourcing (BPO) contracts, in the short term.

"The Indian IT-BPO sector is an integral part of the global ecosystem and is likely to be impacted in the short-term (two to three quarters), as clients become cautious in their discretionary spending and … Read more

Wind-generated ocean swells not so swell

You may have missed this on your favorite blog site, and you definitely missed this if you looked at American TV news. Reunion Island got smashed on Saturday. Big waves. Lots of damage. It was not a tsunami this time. Certainly earthquakes can pack an enormous wallop, but the supporters of wind power surely have something going as well.

The European Space Agency (ESA) satellites were tracking the course of the big swells. Ocean swells, not rich guys with big heads. Big, really big waves. Some that slammed into Reunion without warning were over 35 feet high.

First, the satellite … Read more

Tribe uses military technology to preserve culture

American Indians gave the U.S. military an advantage in World War II by using their native language to confound enemy code-breakers, and now a piece of defense equipment may be returning the favor.

The Prairie Island tribe in Minnesota is using a Voxtec International Phraselator P2 to pass along its Dakota language to the next generation, children K-12. Speak into the P2 handheld translator and it will instantly and accurately "translate spoken English words and phrases into any Native language," according to defense contractor Voxtec.

"The Phraselator technology is allowing us to preserve an integral piece … Read more
