Microsoft 'very surprised' by Google's Exchange ActiveSync ouster

Microsoft and Google are having a war of words on their respective blogs.

Google last week announced in a blog post entitled "Winter cleaning" that on January 30, it will be shutting down Google Sync -- a feature that allowed Gmail users to sync their mail, calendar, and contacts through Microsoft's Exchange ActiveSync protocol -- for consumers who use the company's free e-mail application. Google Apps for Business, Government, and Education users will still have access to Google Sync.

Google Vice President of Engineering Venkat Panchapakesan said the decision was made after the company adopted CardDAV, … Read more

Mail requesting p99-imap server password with iCloud

When you upgrade to Apple's iCloud service from MobileMe, the system will transfer your Mail account over to the new service as well. While not much changes for Apple's Mail service itself, some people have found that e-mail clients such as Mail will sometimes not connect properly.

When the connection problems happen, Mail or other e-mail clients including those on iOS devices will issue a message stating something like, "The iCloud IMAP server 'p99-imap.mail.me.com' rejected the password..." and request that you re-enter the password. When you do the password does not work, and … Read more

Tip: Change Mail settings to save hard drive space

While working with a client today, I uncovered a handy tip that could save you an extremely large amount of hard drive space on your Mac. My client had just purchased a new 13-inch MacBook Pro and had her information transferred from her old machine.

Shortly thereafter she began receiving error messages that her startup disk was full and that she needed to delete files on her machine in order to continue using it.

The first place I looked for extraneous files was in media folders. Typically, deleting video and high-resolution photo files will give the quickest relief to a … Read more

Troubleshooting Mail passwords

Apple's Mail e-mail client is a fairly straightforward tool for accessing IMAP, POP, and Exchange accounts, and for the most part it works quite well, but it is not without its quirks. One of these is that at times Mail can start prompting users for their account passwords again and seem to not properly store them. When this happens the program may appear to stop interacting with the mail server for such functions as downloading new messages.

The first thing to do whenever there is a problem with Mail's connection with an e-mail server is to open the … Read more

Sent mail messages being saved as draft

One relatively common problem people have with Mail is that the program will seem to collect messages in its Drafts mailbox. While not an intrusive issue, and definitely one that can be fixed by deleting the messages in this mailbox, some people have found the drafts are continually and permanently saved every time they compose new messages.… Read more

Google fine-tunes Gmail's IMAP access options

Some of the tweaks that arrived with the launch of Gmail Labs are fairly silly (Mail Goggles and Old Snakey spring to mind), but a new option that arrived Thursday makes it increasingly apparent that Google is doing something right with the e-mail service.

The company launched Advanced IMAP Controls in Gmail Labs, a feature that lets users fine-tune the behavior of the IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) technology that outside e-mail services or software can use to access Gmail accounts.

For example, you can limit which of your mail labels are exposed as folders to outside e-mail clients to … Read more

Google Apps Premier four days of failure in Firefox

It's a bit hard to see in this screenshot but Google Apps Premier hasn't been working for me in Firefox since Thursday. There is no rhyme or reason, no new plugins etc.--it just stopped working and won't start again.

Basically the page never loads, it just gives me that blue bar but never reaches the finish line. I've reset the cache, rebooted, reset Firefox entirely and will now try and reinstall. Hard to see what else would make this go away. Back to Safari I will go.

I wonder how this factors into the 99.… Read more

Gmail afflicted with remote access problem

Many Gmail users had problems with the Google e-mail service's ability to communicate with e-mail software Wednesday.

Numerous people on a Gmail Help forum reported problems tapping into Gmail with IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) technology, which lets people with desktop e-mail software such as Thunderbird or Microsoft Entourage to do so.

Google acknowledged the problem but said it's fixed. "Gmail users had difficulty accessing some features in Gmail for about a half hour today. The issue is now resolved," the company said in a statement Wednesday.

"We take issues like this very seriously, and … Read more

Hands-on with Gmail's new IMAP support

Gmail is getting support for IMAP clients like Outlook, Thunderbird, and the iPhone. This means Gmail users will no longer be limited to the Gmail.com user interface or to the weak integration they might get from clients using the much more rudimentary POP e-mail protocol.

There's no word on the official rollout schedule for IMAP support. Some users have it, some don't. I do. Don't ask me why. To see if you have support, click the "Settings" link to see if you have a "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" tab.

Update: IMAP rollout … Read more
