Mail-order game disc renter GameFly Inc. has announced that it will acquire Direct2Drive, the PC game digital distributor service owned by News Corp. subsidiary IGN Entertainment. The announcement, first reported by Gamefly-owned gaming news site Shacknews, confirms rumors about the acquisition that surfaced earlier in the week.

The two companies seem like a reasonable fit. GameFly is essentially the Netflix of video games, renting out discs for game consoles through the mail. Matt Casamassina, who has spent the last 13 years covering Nintendo at game publisher IGN, is leaving the company and heading to Apple. According to his personal blog, Casamassina will be in charge of curating the gaming content in the App Store.

What, exactly, that means isn't clear, though Casamassina wrote, "In a nutshell, I will be leading the charge for games on the App Store, so whether you browse through iTunes, iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad, the games content you see will be handpicked and organized by me and my team."

For those who aren't familiar with it, Flixster is a user-generated movie review site. They also feature a robust mobile offering, which includes the most popular movie app for the iPhone, as well as apps for Android, Palm Pre, and Blackberry.
