Apply vintage viewfinder effects with Viewmatic

The makers of the popular Wood Camera app are out with a new iPhone camera app called Viewmatic. It lets you apply vintage viewfinder overlays to your photos, among various filters and effects.

The app costs 99 cents, which provides 10 viewfinder overlays and 10 filters, which Viewmatic calls lenses. You can double down on the number of viewfinders and lenses at your disposal via in-app purchases.

Oddly, for an app that mimics viewfinders, Viewmatic does not let you snap a shot. Instead, you can add photos from your Camera Roll or paste one that you may have copied to … Read more

Review: NeroKwik combines your images into a single source

NeroKwik attempts to solve the problem of your images being spread across too many devices and networks, and for the most part it succeeds. Creating a single, easy-to-navigate interface for all of your photos across your iOS devices, Facebook, and Google+, NeroKwik works well, but not without some issues.

NeroKwik is designed to make it easy to access all of your photos on one device. It does this by adding every photo on each device you install the app on to an online account. You can also connect Facebook and Google+ to the same accounts so you can easily view … Read more

Apple's iOS 7 overhaul said taking a black-and-white tack

Jonathan Ive, Apple's senior vice president of industrial design and the new design chief for iOS, has one idea in mind for the mobile operating system: out with the old and in with the new.

According to 9to5Mac, which cited unidentified sources who claim to have knowledge of the major changes intended for the upcoming iOS 7, Ive's new design ideas boil down to "black, white, and flat all over." What that means, the sources told 9to5Mac, is that Ive has decided to drop the textures, the shiny icons, and the lifelike design features in favor … Read more

Get creative with iPhone videos using Montaj

There's no question that photo apps are extremely popular on mobile devices, which is leading to an explosion in video apps. Twitter launched its own Vine app, which allows users to create 6-second films and share them across Twitter and Facebook.

Another app, Montaj, is aiming to give iPhone users another option when it comes to getting creative with short videos, albeit in a longer form than the 6-second videos you'll find in Vine. Users are able to create short videos; the default limit of clips in a Montaj is 12 (adjustable to 36 in the settings), all … Read more

Gmail service Mailbox redesigns app with iPad in mind

Mailbox, the popular e-mail app snapped up by Dropbox earlier this year, has redesigned its app for the iPad.

The new app, which currently only works with Gmail accounts, has the same functions as the old app. It lets users organize their e-mail using swipe motions with the ultimate goal of reaching "inbox zero."

Mailbox CEO Gentry Underwood said there were a lot of requests for an app designed specifically for the iPad. Formally, users could use Mailbox on any iOS 6 device, including the iPad, but the layout was created with smaller devices in mind.

Better search finds its way into Android Chrome

Google made searching in Chrome for Android a bit easier with an update Wednesday to the browser.

The latest stable version of Google Chrome 27 for Android (download) now displays search queries in the location bar's Omnibox. The change obfuscates the URL display during searches, to show more results and make it easier to tweak the search terms, according to the Google blog announcing the update.

Another tweak hides the location bar entirely once you start scrolling, so that you can view a Web page in fullscreen. History viewing has finally made it to the tablet version of Android … Read more
