The honest ad your cable company will never make

I'd like to help you work out your frustrations today.

There again, you have so many -- at least judging by the comments section here -- that I don't really have enough time.

Instead, then, here's an ad -- thank you, Techdirt, for exposing it to me -- that will help you be at one with your feelings about your high-speed Internet and cable provider.… Read more

10 funny tweets about J.J. Abrams directing 'Star Wars'

Take a deep breath, perhaps even a Darth Vader-size breath. Reports indicate that Disney chose "Star Trek" director J.J. Abrams to direct the upcoming "Star Wars: Episode VII" sci-fi epic due in 2015. Have a laugh at a few of the amusing tweets about the rumored news, which caused a level of excitement perhaps equivalent to the noise inside Obi-Wan's head after the destruction of Alderaan.

One Twitter user quipped about how ol' J.J. seems to have his hand in everything star-related.

Might as well give J.J. Abrams Dancing with the Stars, … Read more

The Onion uncovers Apple's new 'iPhone 5C'

It's rare that The Onion manages to scoop other news outlets, especially when it comes to tech, but it happened today: Apple will soon unveil the iPhone 5C, a new model with a special feature designed especially for college girls.

And forget grainy leaked snapshots; The Onion has actual video of the 5C, as shown in the below exclusive news report.… Read more

I'd Cap That+ adds even more funny to photos

I'd Cap That+ is the paid follow-up to the wildly popular, free caption-generating app I'd Cap That. For 99 cents, "+" offers the same crude humor of its predecessor, but adds a few features that many felt the original were missing.

Like its free counterpart, I'd Cap That+ is a novelty app that automatically generates hilarious, sometimes crude captions for your iPhone photos. Just fire it up, choose to either take a new photo or use an existing photo from your phone's gallery, and hit Use. After that, watch I'd Cap That slap a … Read more

I'd Cap That adds funny to photos

I'd Cap That is a novelty app that automatically generates hilarious, sometimes crude captions for your iPhone photos. Just fire it up, choose to either take a new photo or use an existing photo from your phone's gallery, and hit Use. After that, watch I'd Cap That slap a completely ridiculous and possibly humiliating caption under your mug (or your friend's). Most of the captions generated are pretty good at getting laughs, and many of them might even get shudders. See, the app often uses explicit and/or sexual language in its captions, so it comes … Read more

Onion tweets itself into trouble, but consider the source

Humor is only skin deep. No, wait. That's beauty. Humor is deep beneath the skin and merely masquerades as beautifully superficial.

The Onion has mined the true depths of humor for quite a while now. However, yesterday it seems to have peeled its way into something of a misstep.

You see, unless you were unreasonably detained by your Congressman yesterday, you'll know that the Onion tweeted this: "BREAKING: Witnesses reporting screams and gunfire heard inside Capitol building."

There wasn't so much as a link with this little tweet, which might (or might not) be the … Read more

IE team pokes fun at rapid-release Firefox 6

Matching Firefox's new rapid-release development cycle, Microsoft's Internet Explorer team has downsized the traditional congratulatory cake it sends to its browser rival.

The new cake arrived last week to Mozilla upon shipment of Firefox 6. Jonathan Nightingale, director of Firefox engineering for Mozilla, posted a photo of the cake on Flickr.

Under the rapid-release program, new versions of the browser ship every six weeks, which means the change in features from the earlier version is correspondingly smaller. No doubt Microsoft--which is still using the big-change, infrequent-update approach with IE--was poking fun at the new release philosophy when it … Read more

Cr-48's Chrome OS Easter egg: Blue screen of snark

A couple of months after Easter itself came and went, the Easter egg Google shipped with its Chrome OS prototype laptops has finally been discovered.

Brad Wells found the Easter egg. Aided by a little Google searching, he found out how to activate a fake blue screen of death--one of the "legacy" leftovers from the PC era Google hopes to banish with its browser-based operating system. Then, with an ASCII code converter, he found a parody of the legalese that causes me a lot more heartburn these days than BSODs.

Wells dug up the egg after Chrome … Read more

The sexy little software that spots smutty jokes

Many years ago, there was a cricket match between the West Indies and England. (Cricket's a little like baseball, only takes longer and often no one wins.)

The radio commentators were talking about a bowler (pitcher) called Michael Holding. The batsman (hitter) was Peter Willey. One of the commentators then said, quite naturally: "The bowler's Holding, the batsman's Willey."

After a nanosecond of silence, the whole commentating crew was reduced to monstrous giggles. They couldn't stop. There was nothing they could do. Because, well, one of them had suggested that the bowler was holding … Read more

You Don't Know Jack is back--and it's awesome

The best Jack since Bauer...is back.

I'm talking, of course, about You Don't Know Jack, the hilarious PC (though not always "PC") trivia game that debuted way back in 1995. It spawned all kinds of sequels, but has been AWOL for over a decade.

That changed a few months ago, when YDKJ came roaring back for Windows and game consoles. And today, I'm giddy to report, Jack has hit the App Store. The verdict? It is, without question, the best iOS trivia game to date.

For those unfamiliar with the series, YDKJ plays like … Read more
