With Hewlett-Packard's stock price going south in a hurry, CEO Meg Whitman tried to advance the argument that HP's 'return to greatness' will based on great products.

"In terms of investments, we are very focused on product, product, product," said CEO Meg Whitman in today's earnings conference call, via a transcript provided by Seeking Alpha.

Whitman continued. "Great companies return to greatness on the basis of product."

She went on to cite products like its "Gen8" servers, Moonshot servers, and new lines of PCs, printers, and services.

HP restructures, merging PC and printer units

Hewlett-Packard today made it official: It is merging its PC and printing units in a bid to improve the financial profile of both increasingly commoditized products.

The news, which surfaced yesterday at AllThingsD, means that Vyomesh Joshi, who led the printer unit, is retiring. The combined unit will now report to Todd Bradley.

HP said in a statement that the combination will help the company's go-to-market strategy, branding, supply chain, and customer support.

However, analysts were already questioning the rationale.

For instance, Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu said the combination isn't likely to result in much cost savings … Read more

HP eyes combined PC-printer unit, report says

Hewlett-Packard's increasingly commodity business units—PCs and printers—will reportedly be combined in a sweeping reorganization.

According to AllThingsD, HP will combine the personal systems group and printing unit. Vyomesh Joshi, chief of the printing unit, will leave the company. Joshi has repeatedly been a CEO candidate as HP swapped leaders like NFL teams change out football coaches. Todd Bradley, head of the personal systems unit, will lead the new unit.

The larger question: Would this reorg make sense?

From a financial perspective, a combined unit could solve a few problems. Consider:

Google Cloud Print now native on all HP printers

Google announced its cloud-based printing service last year to much anticipation, but the last development version of Google Chrome required a proxy solution for printers that didn't carry native support. To update users, HP announced today that all HP ePrint-enabled devices will now support Google Cloud Print apps on a range of mobile devices.

Cloud Print makes it easy to produce printed copies of word processing documents, Web sites, and articles without the need for a mobile printer. The service temporarily hosts the files you attach on its own servers, then sends the document to your printer for output.… Read more

New HP Web-connected printers take it to the cloud

Internet Week commenced Monday morning in New York City with a keynote speech from HP's Vyomesh Joshi about the next evolution of Web-connected printing. HP's solution takes advantage of cloud-based data transfers and lets users send documents and pictures from any e-mail device to any one of HP's newest Web-connected "ePrinters."

HP first introduced the idea of Web-connected printing last year with its flagship all-in-one, the HP Photosmart Touchsmart Web. Now HP has plans to integrate its "print anywhere" plan across its OfficeJet, PhotoSmart, LaserJet, and OfficeJet divisions, and each printer will ship … Read more

Lexmark, HP face off in Web-connected,
touch-screen-printing battle

Not to be outdone by HP's recent touch-screen printer, the folks at Lexmark just debuted their line of Web-connected touch-screen all-in-ones.

The big difference between the two is that although they both have touch technology, the HP Photosmart Premium with TouchSmart Web is meant to live in the home, while the three printers featuring Lexmark's MyTouch technology are designed to increase productivity for the business market. Nevertheless, this won't stop us from putting them side-by-side in the first ever Web-connected, touch-screen-printing kumite.

Only three out of the eight new products include a large 4.3-inch touch screen, … Read more

This video, titled "Invent," is Matt Robinson and Tom Wrigglesworth's entry for HP's D&AD Students Awards contest, which awards students who present "an idea which promotes HP workstations' ability to bring to life anything the creative mind can conceive."

Tom and Matt responded with a unique design using stop-motion animation, catchy synthesized music, eight HP Deskjet D1560 inkjet printers, and a whole lotta paper to create this "aesthetic symphony."

HP teams with Google, Fandango for Web-connected touch-screen printer

HP on Monday introduced the HP Photosmart Premium with TouchSmart Web, believed to be the world's first Web-connected printer with a touch screen. I had a chance to get an exclusive look at the new device, and I'm really impressed with HP's effort to reinvigorate the printer as the central hub in the digital home.

The Photosmart Premium with TouchSmart Web is poised to become HP's flagship printer when it's released in September. It's got all the common features we now expect to find in an HP Photosmart All-in-One, including printer/fax/copier/scanner, USB 2.0, 802.11b/g/n wireless, Ethernet, Bluetooth connectivity, HP's paper feed technology that automatically senses the size of media needed to a complete a job, five individual ink cartridges, and the ability to print screenshots directly from a PlayStation 3.

The real crowning feature, however, is the TouchSmart Web control panel that lets users connect to the Web and use custom apps from services like Fandango, Google, and Coupons Inc.

The massive 4.33-inch LCD touch screen is by far the largest display I've ever seen on a printer, and it's not just for looks--it actually has a purpose.… Read more
