Home Depot iPhone switch short-circuits BlackBerry stock

Shares of BlackBerry dropped 4.6 percent today after Home Depot confirmed a report by AppleInsider that the company is handing out iPhones to about 10,000 employees who were using the BlackBerry. A spokesman for the home improvement retailer did not offer more detail about when the replacement process began, other than to acknowledge that Home Depot was "replacing the current base of BlackBerry technology with iPhone, but these are not the mobile devices used in our stores."

The decision hardly constitutes make-or-break news for BlackBerry, but it comes only a week after the company introduced a … Read more

Judge: Home Depot went too far in seeking worker's social posts

A federal judge in California has rejected Home Depot's attempt to gain broad access to Facebook, Twitter, and other social-network posts made by a former employee who sued the retailer two years ago.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Suzanne Segal ruled this month that the big box retailer had the rights only to "social-networking communications between plaintiff and any current or former Home Depot employees" that relate to her employment or the lawsuit.

The suit was filed by Danielle Mailhoit, previously a manager of Home Depot's Burbank, Calif., store, who was fired after a 2010 investigation of … Read more

PayPal makes its way to brick-and-mortar stores

Shoppers will be able to use PayPal in more than 2,000 brick-and-mortar stores come March.

The e-commerce payment business, owned by eBay, started a preliminary run this week in 51 Home Depot stores in the San Francisco Bay Area, according to PayPal spokesman Anuj Nayar. By the end of the year, PayPal plans to add 20 more retailers and expand nationally.

"We are excited about our partnership with The Home Depot," Nayar said. "We will continue to be focused on delivering the best possible product experience for customers and retailers as we expand with The Home … Read more

Philips 75-watt LED for sale for $39.97

Royal Philips Electronics' new 75-watt-equivalent LED bulb is now available for sale online.

The 17-watt LED bulb is equal to a 75-watt incandescent but uses 80 percent less electricity and lasts 24 times longer than the average incandescent, according to Philips.

The bulb has a lifespan of 25,000 hours, roughly the equivalent of 17 years of daily four-hour use, and a color temperature of 2,700, which is a warm yellow light similar to that of an incandescent bulb, according to company specs.

Philips first unveiled the bulb, which is compatible to fit into any 75-watt incandescent socket, in … Read more

Home Depot's latest small wind deal

Home Depot will begin to offer small wind turbines and installation services from Southwest Windpower, both companies announced today.

Southwest Windpower makes a small wind turbine called the Skystream 3.7 Personal Wind Turbine.

The turbine is rated at 2.4 kilowatts and produces about 400 kilowatt-hours of electricity per month when operating at a minimal wind speed of 12 miles per hour, according to the turbine manufacturer.

Not all Home Depot stores will be carrying the turbines immediately. The wind turbines are initially being offering only at some stores in particularly windy states including California, Idaho, Nevada, Texas, Utah, … Read more

Tricks of the cheapskate trade: Buying coupons on eBay

What's with the late post today? Simple: I couldn't find a deal worth posting. So I thought I'd dip into my cheapskate bag of tricks and talk about coupons.

Specifically, eBay is home to a bonanza of coupons for stores like Home Depot, Kohl's, Lowe's, and J.C. Penney. If you're planning a major purchase (and you can put it off long enough for your coupon to arrive in the mail), you stand to save a bundle.

For example, this auction is for 10 Lowe's coupons, each good for 10 percent off your … Read more

Linux destined for low-cost Intel Atom PCs

Intel's low-cost Atom processors will be at the core of inexpensive PCs. And inexpensive computers these days often come with Linux.

How do PC companies shave off the last hundred dollars or so to get to $299 or in some cases $199? Easy. They swap out Windows (pricey) for Linux (free).

Case in point: Home Depot, the home supply store, sells a Mirus-branded desktop with either Windows or Linux. Based on the same hardware, one model sells for $419, the other for $299. Can you guess which one is $299? That's a steep price cut--more than 25 percent--for … Read more

Stolen Home Depot laptop exposes employee data

Correction, 8:22 a.m. PST: The original version of this article inaccurately reported the timing of the theft. The laptop was stolen several weeks ago.

A laptop containing personal data on about 10,000 Home Depot employees was stolen from the car of a regional manager, Home Depot announced Wednesday.

The laptop was stolen several weeks ago from the car of the regional manager in Massachusetts while it was parked in front of his home, according to Home Depot.

"The Home Depot takes data security seriously and works very diligently to protect its customers' and associates' privacy," … Read more

More alternative-energy innumeracy

As an engineer, I hate to see bad engineering treated like a good idea.

I've written recently about questionable proposals for human power generation, electric vehicle recharging and fuel cells. In some cases, there's nothing really wrong with the underlying technology, but it's being implemented and promoted using bad math and misleading promises.

The latest example of innumeracy comes from Shawn Frayne, an independent inventor here in Silicon Valley. Frayne's Windbelt is a low-cost wind-power generator that uses a fluttering membrane instead of rotating blades to convert wind power into mechanical motion; a simple linear generator … Read more
