Review: Evernote keeps all your thoughts organized and accessible

Evernote for Mac makes it possible to write yourself reminders and notes, and keep them stored and organized in the cloud for safekeeping. By installing additional apps for your other devices you can also access your notes on the go from an iPad or iPhone.

We installed Evernote for Mac via the App Store, and were brought directly to a screen for creating an account. Once inside the app, we poked around, appreciating its attractive and functional interface. On our test machine, we wrote a quick note and attached a file to it. Switching over to an iPhone, we fired … Read more

At Frank Lloyd Wright's home, a lab for world-class architecture

OAK PARK, Ill. -- Before Frank Lloyd Wright became the most famous architect in the world, he was a struggling employee who had to borrow money from his boss to build his own house.

That house, and the adjoining professional studio, make up the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio in this posh suburb of Chicago. I got a chance for a behind-the-scenes tour Monday as part of Road Trip 2013, and as a Wright fan who has toured other favorites like Taliesin West in Arizona, Fallingwater in Pennsylvania, and the Marin County Civic Center in California, this was a … Read more

Input lag: How important is it?

Recently, CNET started measuring input lag. This is the amount of time it takes for a TV or projector to produce an image. In the worse case, excessive input lag can cause lip sync issues. In most cases, it can lead to worse performance with certain games.

Since the article hit, there's been a surge of people ridiculing certain displays as "unacceptable" due to their input lag issues.

Hang on -- unacceptable? Just how important is input lag, anyway?… Read more

AT&T's mobile chief: We've sold out of the Facebook phone

So, the HTC First wasn't a complete disaster after all.

AT&T managed to get rid of most of its inventory, according to AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega. The move to a 99-cent price tag helped spur sales of the Facebook phone, which struggled to catch on with consumers.

"We sold a bunch more when we lowered the price," he said in an interview on Monday. "We sold everything we had on that."

It's unclear how many HTC First phones AT&T had in its inventory, and the … Read more

Curved OLED HDTV screens are a bad idea (for now)

Both Samsung and LG, two of the biggest players in the burgeoning world of organic light-emitting diode televisions, have announced (or depending on where you live, are selling) curved OLED screens to go along with traditional "flat" OLED screens.

Curved screens have been used in theaters for decades, and more recently in some high-end home theaters, too. In a TV though, it's nothing more than a gimmick.

Here's why.… Read more

$8 million speakers? Home theaters fit for a king

For some people, an ordinary old giant flat-screen television and Blu-ray player just aren't enough.

How much would you spend for the best of the best? Some hard-core videophiles and audiophiles dump incredible amounts of cash on home theater equipment (and fancy home theaters) that can cost as much as the average car or house. … Read more

TV weight: Fact and fiction

Recently we took a poll where we asked "What's stopping you from getting a plasma?" A majority of voters rebuked my premise, picking "I love my plasma." The other responses were fairly evenly split among the choices.

However, there was a surprisingly common reason given in the comments that baffled me, and it's so bizarre it's clearly worth debunking, or at least shining the light on the facts.

So how much do TVs weigh?… Read more
