Kids, you know that studying is boring.

Now I can tell you that it's useless, too. Oh, of course I always knew this deep down inside, but I was waiting for the one thing that would confirm this: data.

Devices and services? Microsoft hiring remains software focused

Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer has said repeatedly that the company is morphing from a software company to a devices and services business.

But a new research report that analyzes the more than 2,000 job openings at the company suggests that software development still reigns supreme.

Griffin Securities scanned the job postings at Microsoft's careers Web site "in order to gauge the areas in which they are looking to add headcount as an indication of their product, functional, market or geographical priorities," Jay Vleeschhouwer, an analyst at the New York firm, noted in his report. Apple reportedly hires LG's former OLED TV expert

Apple has reportedly hired a display expert with ties to LG and Samsung, and whose most recent work included efforts on OLED technology for TV sets.

According to a report from the OLED Association, Apple has wooed James (Jueng-Gil) Lee, a display and semiconductor technology expert who's had stints at LG Display, Samsung, and now-defunct flat-panel design company Candescent Technologies.

Execs' e-mails key in employee no-poaching lawsuit, judge says

E-mails reveal that executives at Apple and Google saw a substantial financial benefit to a mutual agreement not to recruit each other's employees, a federal judge said today.

The comments came in relation to a lawsuit brought by five former employees at various tech companies, alleging that an illegal conspiracy eliminated competition for talent. The lawsuit, filed in 2011, accuses Apple, Adobe Systems, Google, Pixar, Intel, and Intuit of conspiring to keep workers' salaries artificially low.

Yahoo acquires tiny mobile video-chat startup OnTheAir

Continuing CEO Marissa Mayer's march toward all things mobile, Yahoo has acquired tiny mobile video-chat startup OnTheAir.

Yahoo snapped up the San Francisco-based startup today, the five-employee company announced on its Web site. Yahoo confirmed the acquisition, its second since Mayer took over as chief executive this past July.

"When we first met with the team at Yahoo, it was clear that everybody there is committed to making mobile products the backbone for the world's daily habits," the company wrote.

Yahoo's Mayer taps Jacqueline Reses to run HR, find talent

Yahoo has hired a new senior executive to head up its human resources division.

The online company announced today that Jacqueline Reses has been appointed executive vice president of Yahoo's People and Development division. In her new role, which she'll take on starting September 7, Reses will lead Yahoo's human resources and talent acquisition.

Reses joins Yahoo from private equity investment group Apax Partners. While there, she worked on recruiting and retaining investment professionals. She also served as CEO of a real estate software company, iBuilding.

T-Mobile sees a net 350 jobs eliminated from restructuring

For T-Mobile, restructuring isn't just code for layoffs.

The carrier, in the middle of a massive overhaul of the business, said it would eliminate 900 jobs, as CNET previously reported, but hire 550 new positions. The new jobs will support its new business and strategic opportunities.
