Dutch designer Daan Roosegaarde thinks we drive on dumb roads. So he teamed with mega European construction company Heijmans Infrastructure to create a vision of a "smart highway" for the Netherlands -- and possibly the rest of the world.

The U.S. government is launching a project in Michigan where 3,000 "smart cars" will be able to "talk" to their drivers.

No, it's not some Knight Rider-esque KITT scenario, it's actually specialized technology that's equipping cars with Wi-Fi to see if such communication can make the roads safer.

City buses, streetcars, and regional rail lines all over the world run on electricity, garnered from overhead lines. Now Siemens wants to apply the same technology to long-haul trucking with its eHighway concept.

Siemens, an industrial and automotive supplier, contends that the majority of vehicle pollution comes from big diesel trucks transporting goods over many freeway and highway miles. Its eHighway would eliminate tailpipe pollution from these trucks for the majority of those miles.

Say goodbye to range anxiety--well, while heading through the Pacific Northwest, anyway.

A 160-mile stretch of Interstate 5, dubbed the Electric Highway, now offers a little piece of mind for EV drivers, the Associated Press reported.

According to the story, EV drivers from the northern border of California to Cottage Grove, Ore., can stop at any one of eight stations, which are spaced out along the road about every 25 miles, for free.

Although there have been no reports of problems so far, Fisker is recalling 239 Karma plug-in hybrid sports cars due to a high-voltage battery problem that could result in a fire.

The problem with the luxury plug-in hybrid is that certain hose clamps may have been positioned incorrectly during assembly, which could cause a coolant leak near the battery compartment.

According to the the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration: "If coolant enters the battery compartment, an electrical short could occur possible resulting in a fire."

The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) today named its Top Safety Picks--115 vehicles in all. The list includes 15 vehicles from Toyota, Lexus, and Scion, 14 vehicles from General Motors, and 13 each from Volkswagen and Audi.

The winners' circle includes 18 new vehicles for 2012, and 97 models that qualified for the 2011 award carry over to 2012.

It's not the accolade and track record manufacturers strive for, but once again the Cadillac Escalade tops the charts as the most frequently stolen vehicle in the U.S.

The Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI), tracking insurance claims for vehicle thefts, found that for all 2008-2011 model year vehicles, the Escalade is reported stolen to insurance companies at a rate that's 10 times the average vehicle. For every 1,000 vehicles, the SUV racks up 10.8 theft insurance claims. On the other side of the scale, the Lexus RX 350 is reported to agencies only 0.6 times per 1,000 vehicles. … Read more

As a number of Audi TDI LeMans cars get ready to take on the Nurburgring 24-hour race this weekend, another driver has more-ambitious plans. Rainer Zietlow leads a team planning to drive a Volkswagen Touareg TDI from Argentina to Alaska, a journey of 16,000 miles, in 14 days.

The trip will start on June 29 in Ushuaia, Argentina. Fans can follow the progress of the trip on an interactive map on the team's Web site. Four drivers will take five hour shifts, going non-stop, expecting to end up at Deadhorse, Alaska on July 13.
