Apple releases revised plans for its 'spaceship' headquarters

As Apple waits for the city of Cupertino, Calif., to give the final thumbs-up for the design of its new spaceshiplike headquarters, the company has been tinkering with the details.

Cupertino published the software giant's project update for the headquarters on the city Web site on Wednesday. Included in the documents are the project description, site and landscaping plans, floor plans, renderings, and a bicycle plan.

Apple's "Spaceship" headquarters, which have been in the planning stages for years and were the brainchild of late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, will be open for business in 2016, the company says.

The news was announced today by CEO Tim Cook at Apple's annual shareholder meeting. He reported that Apple is currently working with the city to gain approval and hopes to break ground for the facility later this year.

Google to invest $1B in new U.K. headquarters -- Reuters

Google is ready to drop a significant sum of cash into a London plot of land that will one day be home to its U.K. headquarters, according to a Reuters report.

Google is investing 650 million pounds (about $1 billion) in a 2.4-acre plot at the Kings Cross Central development in London, Reuters reported yesterday, citing developers involved in the purchase. The company plans to build a one-million-square-foot building on the plot that will become its U.K. headquarters when it's finished in 2016.

Sony sells its Madison Ave. headquarters for $1.1 billion

Sony announced today that it is selling its U.S. headquarters building located on Madison Avenue in New York City to a real estate consortium headed by The Chetrit Group. The sale price for the 37-story building is $1.1 billion.

"Given the opportunities and challenges in the current economic and real estate landscape, selling 550 Madison now is a timely and logical strategic move," Sony Corporation of America President Nicole Seligman said in the statement, according to Bloomberg.

Apple's plans for building a spaceship-like headquarters have hit a bit of a rough patch, according to a new report.

The construction of Apple's new headquarters in Cupertino, Calif., may not be completed until mid-2016, Bloomberg reported today, citing an updated proposal filed with the city. An earlier proposal had Apple breaking ground this year, but the city of Cupertino likely won't complete its environmental impact survey until June, potentially pushing back the ground breaking to 2014.

Apple had hoped to start moving into its new digs in 2015.

After finally letting users onto the site without an invite, Pinterest is now getting serious about mobile.

At an event in its new San Francisco headquarters today, the social network-meets-virtual pinboard debuted two new Pinterest apps -- one for Android and one for iPad, according to AllThingsD.

"Our goal has never been to get you in front of the computer transfixed for hours and hours on end," Pinterest co-founder Ben Silbermann said at the event, according to AllThingsD, "it's to get you offline."

Facebook shoots for major headquarters expansion

Facebook is thinking ahead as it prepares to cash in with its IPO. It has plans of expanding the headquarters, hiring thousands more employees, and adding a new campus. Besides bankers, venture capitalists, early investors, and some employees getting rich, the town of Menlo Park, Calif., is also looking to share the wealth.

The expansion plans for the 57-acre, nine-building campus are the result of a negotiated deal between the social networking company and Menlo Park's government officials. And yesterday, Menlo Park's City Council unanimously approved the plans, according to the Palo Alto Daily News.

Google has big plans for Googleplex.

The company's Mountain View, Calif., headquarters will soon welcome a 120,000-square-foot "Google Experience Center" that will serve as a combination private museum and meeting area, according to a San Jose Mercury News report. The $120 million expansion will also reportedly house labs to test secret projects such as the company's "@home" project--rumored to be a home entertainment device.

Crack a code to get hired by U.K. spy agency

Google is no longer the only employer that wants to recruit via tough-to-crack math questions.

Britain's Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) intelligence agency has launched a Web site challenging visitors to crack a code, according to the BBC. The purpose is to find potential candidates to fill its posts dealing with cyberthreats, which the U.K.'s spy chief recently identified as a disturbing threat.

The competition started November 3 via an unbranded Web site at canyoucrackit.co.uk that displays a visual code resembling a grid of random numbers and letters.
