Facebook boosts #hashtag presence with mobile

Facebook launched hashtags earlier this month, but now it's upping the anty. As of Thursday, hashtags will work on the social network's mobile site and the company is also debuting related hashtags, according to TechCrunch.

What this means is that Facebook hashtags could start to be a lot more abundant and easier to integrate.

Facebook describes hashtags as a way to "turn topics and phrases into clickable links in posts on your personal timeline or your Page, and help people find posts about topics they're interested in." For example, Facebook says, write a post along … Read more

Facebook adds hashtags, mends missing link to pop culture

Facebook has added support for hashtags, fixing a broken link that prevented its 1.11 billion members from associating themselves with celeb gossip, breaking news, and popular memes.

"Starting today, hashtags will be clickable on Facebook. Similar to other services like Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, or Pinterest, hashtags on Facebook allow you to add context to a post or indicate that it is part of a larger discussion," the company wrote in a blog post Wednesday announcing the update. "When you click on a hashtag in Facebook, you'll see a feed of what other people and Pages … Read more

#Hashtags: Facebook's missing link to pop culture

Scan Twitter, Instagram, or Tumblr. Watch your favorite television show, or even listen to the radio, and you might notice that the biggest social network of them all is disconnected from pop culture -- at least when it comes to hash tags.

Hash tags are a form of expression that Facebook, like your grandparents, just can't understand. The social network appears motivated to change that, although a spokesperson wouldn't share details on when and how it will roll out hash tags.

However it shakes out, hash tags on Facebook are long overdue. Their presence could help Facebook lure … Read more

Facebook to finally add hashtags, says WSJ

Facebook is finally jumping on the hashtag bandwagon, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal today.

Unnamed sources told the Journal that Facebook is working on adding the hashtag feature into the network, but it won't roll out anytime soon. A Facebook spokesperson declined to comment, saying, "We do not comment on rumor or speculation."

Popularized on Twitter, the hashtag has become synonymous with social media. Google+ and even Instagram, the photo-sharing service Facebook acquired last year, have the hashtag function on their networks.

Hashtags, words marked by a pound sign, are used to organize … Read more

Obama tax plan hashtag hijacked by conservative think tank

A hashtag launched today by President Obama to push his tax cuts plan was quickly appropriated by a conservative think tank.

In the face of the approaching "fiscal cliff," Obama began promoting the hashtag #My2K on Twitter today as a way of encouraging discussion about his plan to preserve tax cuts for the middle class while letting expire those tax cuts on Americans households earning more than $250,000. The hashtag reflects the extra $2,000 the average middle class family of four could expect to pay if the tax cuts are allowed to expire.

Proud parents name child 'Hashtag'?

The sad conventions of society demand that the world is populated by Peters, Pauls, and Marys.

This is nothing more than lamb-like conformism. Better to be one of the crowd than one endowed with a name like "Bannister."

So I find myself doffing my cap and lowering my quiff on hearing that a pair of proud parents have allegedly refused to bow to convention. They appear to have named their child after something that creates a new convention: Hashtag. … Read more

Sparks fly over anti-Semitic tweets in France

A controversy over an explosion of anti-Semitic tweets in France has raised complaints that Twitter makes it too hard for users to report offensive posts.

Over the last week, Twitter has been awash in anti-Semitic French-language tweets tied to the hashtag "#unbonjuif" ("a good Jew"), prompting arguments that social media in general, and Twitter in particular, are cesspools of objectionable content (article in French).
