Monopoly fans diss robot, choose cat as new token

Ladies and gentlemen, the iron has left the building.

Or rather, the board. In the biggest shakeup of the classic board game Monopoly since Monopoly Live, the iron has gone straight to jail and it won't be getting a release card.

In a reality TV-like vote by Monopoly fans around the world to choose a new token, the iron proved the least popular, garnering support of only 7.6 percent.

Players voted on Facebook for a replacement among five proposed tokens: a robot, a helicopter, a guitar, a diamond ring, and a cat. … Read more

Furby returns, iOS app and all: Hands on with the 2012 version

Holiday shopping season is coming. Oh yes, it is. And the new Furby is waiting. Hasbro has redesigned the Furby and is releasing it this fall, complete with complementary iOS apps and a re-engineered body.

I don't choose to believe that the Furby is officially a retro toy. That ages me too much. The original Furby came out in 1998, which somehow adds up to 14 years ago. I missed Furbymania completely (I was in grad school), but for both newcomers and the Furby-nostalgic Hasbro is readying its first new Furby product since the days of Y2K. The name? It's still just Furby. And one has arrived at our CNET offices.… Read more

AT-AT computer walks on the wild side

One could safely say Dutch computer modder Sander van der Velden adores the behemoth AT-AT vehicle from "The Empire Strikes Back." The self-confessed sci-fi addict recently stuffed a water-cooled computer inside a large Hasbro toy version of Star Wars' most infamous four-legged Rebel annihilator.

The AT-AT computer measures 2 feet tall (plus several more inches for the dock), and contains some spicy hardware, including a Zotac Z68-ITX (Mini-ITX) motherboard running an Intel Core i7 2600k processor, SSD, and built-in Wi-Fi. The water-cooling system (radiator and XSPC pump) uses water blocks to cool the CPU, GPU, and other components.

The designers at Hasbro probably didn't expect someone to take the largest action figure AT-AT ever made and fit a bunch of computer parts into it. … Read more

Hasbro loses bid to block sales of Transformer Prime tablets

Hasbro has lost a round in its effort to protect its "Transformers" territory from encroachment by tablet maker Asus.

The toymaker claimed in a lawsuit filed in Los Angeles federal court in late December that the electronics maker was creating confusion by blending the "Transformers" and Optimus Prime names. Hasbro accused Asus of counting on consumers associating the new tablet with children's toys to sell the Transformer Prime.

However, a judge denied the toy maker's request for a temporary restraining order preventing Asus from selling the tablets under the Transformer Prime name.

"There … Read more

Lightsabers, iPhone Lazer Tag, and Nerf galore: Hasbro at Toy Fair

Nerf, "Star Wars," and Marvel gear was everywhere at Hasbro's showcase at the Toy Fair in New York City.

Hasbro's Toy Fair showcase was housed several blocks away from the rest of Toy Fair 2012, in a two-level set of showrooms that was easily one of the most elaborate setups of the weekend.… Read more

Zynga coming to a board game near you, courtesy of Hasbro

Zynga will allow the toymaker Hasbro to create games and toys based on its online properties, the two companies said.

While no products have yet been confirmed, the deal will produce real world products based on online games like "FarmVille."

Zynga is no stranger to partnerships, having produced branded versions of its games on a number of occasions. Last spring, it paired with Lady Gaga for the launch of GagaVille, a FarmVille environment inspired by Gaga's stylings.

For the time being, it looks like the relationship will be limited to Hasbro producing Zynga inspired games, but it … Read more
