Solavei offers unlimited, no-contract phone service for $49 per month

It costs me around $80 per month to operate my iPhone 4S, which will soon be out of contract.

When that joyous day comes, I will very likely ditch AT&T in favor of something like Solavei, one of a growing number of companies offering cheaper, no-contract mobile service.

Specifically, Solavei gives you unlimited voice, text, and 4G data for $49 per month. OK, there's an asterisk next to "unlimited": the 4G data bounty ends at 4GB, after which Solavei throttles you back to 2G-level service. More on that in a bit.

Unlike Walmart's AT&… Read more

T-Mobile confirms $99 Sidekick 4G for April 20

T-Mobile's twitter account was busy today as it confirmed not one but two Android handsets with launch dates and prices. Shortly after letting its followers know of the dual-core G2X, the carrier tapped the Sidekick 4G with an April 20 release.

T-Mobile also confirmed pricing as $99.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate and two-year service agreement. Considering that the hardware closely resembles Samsung's Galaxy S series of phones, this is a rather attractive price point for a 4G device. As a refresher, the Sidekick 4G boasts a 1GHz Hummingbird processor, 3.5-inch touch display, a rear-facing 3-megapixel … Read more

Google ponders risky Android solo act

As a company that has built a business model atop trust, Google is in a sticky position as it prepares to formally introduce the Nexus One phone.

Google employees were given free Nexus One phones at a company party Friday night, and the Internet went into a tizzy. Reports surfaced later in the weekend that this device was the long-awaited Google phone, the company's answer to Apple's strategy of controlling the hardware, software, and distribution model with the iPhone, rather than the partner-oriented strategy of developing the guts of the operating system and letting partners each put their … Read more

Rumors of a Gphone refuse to die

Is Google really thinking about making a substantial change to its business model by releasing the fabled Gphone?

TechCrunch sparked the latest round of Gphone rumors Wednesday, reporting that its sources indicate Google is working on releasing a Google-branded Android phone sometime in early 2010 that will be sold directly to consumers at retail, presumably bypassing wireless carriers. Such a phone is supposedly being built by a manufacturing partner with the intent that Google's brand will dominate the phone; TechCrunch compares the strategy to what Microsoft did with Toshiba and the Zune music player.

Buzz Out Loud 842: Forking Google

Google has joined the OpenID crowd, but just like Microsoft and Yahoo, you can't use the OpenID on Google, but you can use Google credentials other places. Unlike Microsoft and Yahoo though, Google has decided to tweak the OpenID implementation a little to make it better. That means that it's nonstandard and won't work for all standards-compliant OpenID servers. Bullies. We also admire the new DRM-free music store from clothing retailer, Hot Topic. Really.

Android handset demo at Google Developer Day

Journalists and developers at the Google Developer Day event in London Tuesday were treated to an unexpected demonstration of the upcoming Android handset.

Mike Jennings from Google, who was giving the demonstration, covered up the phone's branding with tape, but it seemed pretty obvious that it's probably the HTC Dream. Not too much is revealed about the device itself, but we did get a sneak peek at what looks to be the final version of the Android OS. Consensus seems to be that it's a lot more polished than previous demonstrations, and though we can't tell … Read more

HTC Dream to launch in a few weeks?

Even though Google's Android and the fabled HTC Dream are nowhere to be seen at the CTIA trade show, we did get news Wednesday that T-Mobile is supposedly getting ready to sell "a mobile phone based on Google's Android software" within weeks.

This is likely to be the HTC Dream, and sources tell Reuters that they'll be making an announcement this month in New York on September 23. Google and T-Mobile did not comment for the story, so this is still not set in stone.

Not that the story is new though. We've heard … Read more

HTC Dream photos leaked

Engadget managed to find really convincing photos of what appears to be the HTC Dream on a Chinese forum. It certainly seems to match the FCC documents of the premier Android device that surfaced a couple of weeks ago.

While the combination of a touch screen and a QWERTY keyboard sounds nice, I can't help but think this looks a little clunky. It certainly doesn't look too revolutionary. But, of course, you can't tell just from the photos. So here's hoping we can get this device in our hands in the not too distant future to … Read more

Android apps: What would you want?

Arguably one of the best things to come out of the iPhone 2.0 firmware update, as well as the launch of the iPhone 3G, is the ability for the iPhone to install third-party applications directly to the phone via the App Store. Well, Google's new Android OS will also support such a service in the form of the Android Market.

As Google announced on Thursday, the Android Market is an online marketplace that will let you find, buy, download, and rate applications (which sounds eerily similar to the iPhone App Store). And, as you can see from the … Read more
