Google to shut down TV advertising sales business

Google is pulling the plug on Google TV Ads, the search giant's five-year attempt to revolutionize the way advertising is sold on TV.

The move was prompted by the booming popularity of watching content across a variety of mobile devices, Google said.

"We've made the hard decision to close our TV Ads product over the next few months and move the team to other areas at Google," Shishir Mehrotra, vice president of product at YouTube, said in a company blog post. "We'll be doubling down on video solutions for our clients (like YouTube, AdWords … Read more

NBC Universal ends ad deal with Google

NBC Universal has ended a two-year-old arrangement with Google that allowed the Internet giant to sell ad space on several NBC cable channels, according to a report.

The Los Angeles Times reported today that the network has called off the deal, whereby Google sold ad space on NBC's Syfy, Oxygen, MSNBC, Sleuth, and Chiller channels by way of its Google TV Ads online marketplace. The marketplace lets companies get help in creating commercials; choose networks, programs, and time slots for showing them; and monitor--through data recorded by set-top boxes--how many household TVs are tuned to a commercial when it … Read more

DirecTV signs up for Google TV Ads

Google's hopes of transforming the TV ad business took another small step on Wednesday, as the search giant announced a distribution deal with DirecTV.

It's fair to say that Google TV Ads hasn't set the television world on fire over the last couple of years. Still, at least it's growing: Google has added 11 new channels on DirecTV that will air ads uploaded by its customers, it announced Wednesday.

Google TV Ads is basically an attempt to take the self-service search-ad model that has turned Google into a financial powerhouse and replicate it on the small … Read more

Google to track TiVo viewing habits

Google and TiVo know you accidentally watch a few ads while fast-forwarding through the commercial breaks of your recorded programs, and they'd like a little more data to back that up.

Google plans to add TiVo "television viewing data" to its existing Google TV Ads program, the two companies said in a press release Tuesday. Google TV Ads is the company's attempt to re-create its AdWords and AdSense model on the small screen through a partnership with Dish Network, and it wants to use TiVo data to help its advertising clients measure how and when their … Read more

Google cashes in at television upfronts

Google crashed the weeklong television "upfronts" Thursday, getting commitments from advertising agencies to place spots on Google TV Ads.

Hollywood Reporter notes this is the first time Google has sold airtime during the upfronts, when advertisers and marketers gather in New York to check out what the television networks--including CBS, publisher of this Web site--have in store for us this fall. (Check out Jimmy Kimmel's hilarious monologue if you haven't yet.)

Google number-crunching to find good TV ads

Google believes the TV remote control is the next mouse, at least when it comes to measuring the fickle behavior of TV viewers and Web surfers regarding advertising.

Google TV Ads has been a formal project for a little over a year, and the company released new data Thursday showing how it's trying to help television advertisers quantify the impact of a good TV ad versus a bad one. Google has been quietly measuring the viewing habits of Dish Network customers, including how likely they are to watch all the way through a compelling, relevant ad or click away … Read more
