Getting started with Boomerang for Gmail on Android

Boomerang is a service that works with your Gmail to send e-mail later, give you follow-up reminders, and notify you if you don't hear back within a specific time. To use the service in the past, you had to install an extension for Chrome or Firefox.

Now there's Boomerang for Gmail on Android, an app that allows you to use all of the same features you expect from the Web versions on your smartphone or tablet.

One big reason for using the app alongside the desktop version is that you don't have to wait until you're … Read more

Gripe and ye shall receive: Google fixes Gmail for Android

Google has come to its senses with its Gmail app for Android.

A June Gmail overhaul dropped the delete button by default from the e-mail software, a move judged to be silly by me and by 88 percent of the CNET readers who responded to our poll.

Plenty of other people didn't give a fig, the button's absence wasn't a showstopper, and it could be restored by changing the settings, but I thought it a departure for a company that today is supposed to be fanatical about crafting a great experience for users.

Well, happily, it's … Read more

Drag and drop to attach photos in Gmail

Gmail has made it easier to attach photos to an e-mail message. When its new compose window was rolled out earlier this year, when you dragged and dropped a photo into a message, Gmail added the photo as an inline image in the body of your message.

Now, the compose window features two separate drop zones for images you are dragging over. The larger of the two in the body of a message instructs you to "Drop files here," which adds photos as inline images. Below, a smaller area instructs you to "Attach files here," which, … Read more

Google uncovers phishing campaign targeting Iranians

Google has detected what appears to be a spike in politically-motivated phishing attacks targeting Gmail accounts belonging to thousands of Iranians just days before a presidential election in the country.

The Web giant identified a "significant jump in the overall volume of phishing activity in the region" in the past three weeks originating from within the country. Eric Grosse, Google's vice president of security engineering, noted in a company blog post Wednesday that "timing and targeting of the campaigns" suggested political motivation ahead of Friday's elections.

Grosse explained how the campaign operated:

Receive push Gmail alerts on iOS after losing ActiveSync support

Last December Google announced its plans to discontinue support for Google Sync as of January 30, 2013. Sync allowed users to access Gmail, Google Contacts and Calendar using Microsoft's Exchange ActiveSync system. What this allowed iOS users to do was set up Gmail as an Exchange account, which in turn provides push alerts for new e-mails in a real-time sync of Calendars and Contacts.

The cutoff date has long passed, but if you had an account already set up and running on your iOS device as Exchange, you had nothing to worry about; Google promised to keep the service … Read more
