President Obama today made a campaign stop at a major chip research and manufacturing in hub in New York to reemphasize his made-in-America theme.

Obama visited the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE) of the University at Albany, State University of New York. CNSE is an education and research facility centered on nanotechnology.

The visit was intended to highlight "insourcing" and the connection between education, innovation, and manufacturing in supporting investment and bringing jobs back to the U.S.

President Obama will visit a chipmaking region in New York that includes a just-completed Globalfoundries manufacturing facility, one of the most advanced in the world.

Globalfoundries (GF) announced that it will take part in hosting a visit by President Obama on May 8 at the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering's (CNSE) NanoTech Complex at the State University of New York in Albany. ARM and Globalfoundries have released details on their upcoming system-on-a-chip platform, which they say will combine "PC-class performance" and a huge jump in battery life for mobile devices.

The companies revealed the details Monday at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Their system-on-a-chip platform is based on ARM's Cortex-A9 processor and Globalfoundries' 28-nanometer manufacturing process. The platform will be used in smartphones, tablets, and smartbooks.

Hector Ruiz, chairman of Advanced Micro Devices spin-off Globalfoundries, will resign from the company in January. The announcement follows the emergence of his name in connection to the Galleon Funds insider trading case.

Ruiz "will take a voluntary leave of absence effective immediately before resigning from the company in January," according to a statement Monday from the Globalfoundries board. Ruiz had submitted his resignation to the board in September with an effective date of January 4, 2010, the statement said.

The former CEO and chairman of Advanced Micro Devices, Hector Ruiz, has been linked to the Galleon insider-trading case, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday.

This revelation comes after an unnamed executive at AMD was cited repeatedly in a complaint filed by the U.S. Attorney for New York's Southern District earlier this month.

The proposed merger of Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing and Globalfoundries will help the AMD manufacturing spinoff propel forward in its bid to become a foundry leader, according to analysts.

Earlier this week, Advanced Technology Investment Company (ATIC) and Chartered Semiconductor announced that they entered into a definitive agreement, in which ATIC would acquire Chartered for $1.75 billion. Globalfoundries, the manufacturing concern spun off from Advanced Micro Devices, plans to announce Wednesday that it has signed up STMicroelectronics--its first true outside customer.

Globalfoundries was created last year in order to eliminate the crippling overhead that AMD was incurring to manufacture its processors. Globalfoundries now conducts business as a contract chip manufacturer, commonly referred to as a foundry.

AMD owns 34.2 percent of the company, while Advanced Technology Investment Co. owns the rest. ATIC is an investment company wholly owned by the government of Abu Dhabi, which is part of the United Arab Emirates.
