Jelly Bean overtakes Ice Cream Sandwich in Android rankings

Android users are flocking to the latest version of Google's mobile operating system in droves.

The number of active devices running Jelly Bean -- Android 4.1 and 4.2, combined -- rose 3.4 points to 28.4 percent in April, surpassing Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0), which fell 1.8 points to 27.5 percent, according to monthly user numbers published by Google on Wednesday. Jelly Bean's growing adoption rate was not enough to overtake the declining Gingerbread (Android 2.3), which slid 1.7 points to 38.5 percent.

The numbers, which are derived … Read more

Android Jelly Bean on the rise, thanks to Google's new math

More Android devices are gobbling up Jelly Bean, but it's largely because of a tweak in how Google calculates the adoption of its mobile operating system.

Jelly Bean, or Android 4.1 to 4.2, made up a quarter of all Android devices, according to data captured during two weeks that ended on April 2. That's an increase from 16 percent a month ago. Droid Life first spotted the data on the Android developer blog site.

Google, however, noted that for the most recent data, it used a different method of tallying up the devices. Previously, the device … Read more

Android 4.0 and above eat away at Gingerbread

Android's Gingerbread operating system has sticking power, but it's finally starting to loosen its hold.

New numbers from Google show that nearly half of all Android devices are running versions of 4.0 and above -- surpassing Gingerbread's individual installed base.

Ice Cream Sandwich, 4.0, and Jelly Bean, 4.1 and 4.2, combined run on 45.1 percent of Android devices, according to numbers from the two week period ending on March 4. This is a 2.5 percent increase over last month.

However, individually, Gingerbread 2.3 still holds the majority of the market. … Read more

Avoid obstacles and collect gumdrops in Gingerbread Run

Christmas' favorite treat now has its own Indiana Jones-like game for you to enjoy. It lets you run, jump, and slide along one of the silliest environments you'll ever see. Gingerbread Run is a lot of fun, but it won't wow you with innovative gameplay or features.

If you've ever played Temple Run or any other similar game, you'll know the gist here. Swipe up to jump, down to slide and tilt your phone to move. The game's strongest point is its really goofy landscape. Your goal is to collect gumdrops in a silly Candy … Read more

Android Jelly Bean gains, Gingerbread seeing a slow fade

The latest version of Android is now sitting on about 10 percent of all Android devices, while Gingerbread dropped below 50 percent, according to the latest numbers from Google.

Jelly Bean -- that is, Android 4.1 and 4.2 -- is up in the two weeks ending January 3, though it's Android 4.1 that's made most of the gains (see chart below).

That's a sizable jump from the first two weeks of December when Jelly Bean, released in July, was on 6.7 percent of all active devices.

Driving the uptick are devices including the … Read more

Gingerbread Millennium Falcon looks pretty Chewie

While Americans are all trying to blow out their electrical circuits with insane light displays, Canadians are busy creating elaborate edible gingerbread structures. A gingerbread "Star Wars" Millennium Falcon is blowing away the competition in Canada's National Gingerbread Showcase 2012.

The insanely elaborate creation comes from the Canoe Brewpub in Victoria, B.C. The spaceship appears to have landed on Hoth, judging by the presence of tons of shredded coconut snow and a Wampa. Chewbecca also lounges near the ship. … Read more

Android 4.1, aka Jelly Bean, ate up 2.7 percent of the market in October, up from 1.8 percent the previous month.

The most dominant version of Android remains version 2.3, or Gingerbread, still found on more than 54.2 percent of all Android devices. That's down slightly … Read more

Android users outraged over Motorola's broken promise

Doran Else bought his Photon 4G last October, lured by the fast dual-core processor and by the close relationship between Motorola and its new owner, Google. Motorola had recently joined the Android Upgrade Alliance, promising to release operating system updates to all its phones for 18 months following their release.

But for Else and thousands of others, those operating system updates turned out to be a mirage. Last Friday, buried in a Motorola forum, the company quietly abandoned its update pledge, killing off plans to ever update the Photon 4G. The Electrify, a re-branded Photon available on the US Cellular … Read more

Gingerbread most popular Android flavor at 56 percent market share

Despite its elderly status in the Android world, Gingerbread is still the man.

Google yesterday updated its Android developers page, revealing that Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) is running on 55.8 percent of all Android devices. Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) came in second place with 23.7 percent share. Interestingly, the latest Android version, Jelly Bean, was only able to muster 1.8 percent share, while the outdated Android 2.2 (Froyo) came in at 12.9 percent market ownership.

That Gingerbread is still dominant is rather surprising, considering that this version of the operating system arrived on … Read more
