More Android devices are gobbling up Jelly Bean, but it's largely because of a tweak in how Google calculates the adoption of its mobile operating system.

Jelly Bean, or Android 4.1 to 4.2, made up a quarter of all Android devices, according to data captured during two weeks that ended on April 2. That's an increase from 16 percent a month ago. Droid Life first spotted the data on the Android developer blog site.

Android's Gingerbread operating system has sticking power, but it's finally starting to loosen its hold.

New numbers from Google show that nearly half of all Android devices are running versions of 4.0 and above -- surpassing Gingerbread's individual installed base.

Ice Cream Sandwich, 4.0, and Jelly Bean, 4.1 and 4.2, combined run on 45.1 percent of Android devices, according to numbers from the two week period ending on March 4. This is a 2.5 percent increase over last month.

The latest version of Android is now sitting on about 10 percent of all Android devices, while Gingerbread dropped below 50 percent, according to the latest numbers from Google.

Jelly Bean -- that is, Android 4.1 and 4.2 -- is up in the two weeks ending January 3, though it's Android 4.1 that's made most of the gains (see chart below).

That's a sizable jump from the first two weeks of December when Jelly Bean, released in July, was on 6.7 percent of all active devices.

As seen over the last two weeks of October, ICS now flavors 25.8 percent of all Android devices, up from 23.7 percent in the prior month and 20.9 percent in August.

Android 4.1, aka Jelly Bean, ate up 2.7 percent of the market in October, up from 1.8 percent the previous month.

Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) versions, which first appeared on the mobile scene in December 2010, are currently running on 57.5 percent of all Android devices, new data posted on the platform's developers site shows. The newer Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) comes in at 20.9 percent market ownership. Android 2.2 (Froyo) is running on 14 percent of devices.
