Best of CES Emerging Tech: 3D Systems CubeX 3D printer

LAS VEGAS--Sight tracking sounds like a new PC interface we might actually use. And anything that helps push wireless charging forward will get our attention. But of all the still-developing technologies we saw at CES, it's the 3D Systems CubeX 3D printer that has us the most excited.

Makerbot announced its own new printer, the Replicator 2X, at this year's show. It's a fine-looking machine, and its print quality looks superb. 3D Systems got the nod for a nomination because its CubeX does things we haven't seen before in a consumer-approachable 3D printer.

Wireless charging goes further--into tablets, cars, the home

LAS VEGAS--Wireless charging pads are available now for a selection of smartphones and small devices, but the technology--anchored by the Wireless Power Consortium's (WPC) "Qi" standard"--is about to get a lot bigger.

Here at CES 2012, Fulton Innovation--a founding member of the WPC--has been showing off its eCoupled wireless power system, which can charge a phone or device that isn't physically touching the charging surface. Fulton director Bret Lewis demonstrated the technology for me charging a phone in a cluttered purse, as well as through a thick wood tabletop. Lewis says that a recent breakthrough also allows for a charge to even be delivered to a device through certain types of metal cases.… Read more

Light-up cereal boxes a huge turn-on

LAS VEGAS--"OMG, stop everything, there's no need to invent anything else," was what we said when we got to the eCoupled stand at CES. And when you see these photos and video, we're sure you'll agree.

Fulton Innovation--don't worry, we hadn't heard of them either--was out here in Vegas demonstrating wireless charging tech that has blown our tiny, gambling-addled minds. Its fabulous packaging uses induction power to create, among lots of other things, some of the most amazing cereal boxes we've ever seen that can illuminate in stages to create an … Read more

The future kitchen looks wirelessly to the past

I've been all about the future this week, writing about a futuristic cotton-candy maker and conceptual kitchen designs that may one day become common place. And why not? It seems appropriate, what with the stock market riding a roller coaster and a wonky economy on everybody's mind. It's nice to sit back, relax a little, and think of what the far-out future could bring us.

For example, wireless electricity. Anybody who has ever searched for an available outlet to plug something into (which should be just about everybody) knows how beneficial the technology could be. I know … Read more
