Qualcomm prepares to ditch Flo TV

Qualcomm is suspending direct sales of devices that use its MediaFlo mobile TV service as the company prepares to pull the plug on its mobile broadcast TV service sometime next year, the company said Tuesday.

The company said in a statement that it will maintain the mobile broadcast TV network to ensure current customers can use the service until the spring of 2011. But after that, it appears the company will discontinue the service and refund customers. Ram becomes the first truck to offer live TV

The Ram 1500, the Ram 2500, and the Ram 3500 now offer live, mobile TV to consumers in Texas through San Diego-based FLO TV, the Chrysler Group announced at the Dallas Auto Show.

Chrysler Group is the first automaker in the United States to offer live, mobile TV to consumers. FLO TV will offer sports, breaking news, children's shows, prime-time sitcoms, reality TV, and daytime dramas.

NFL, here's your 2010 tech resolution: Make games easier to access on the Internet

On my way back from Vegas and the remains of CES 2010, I put my faith in JetBlue. As one of the few airlines with a nearly complete collection of TV networks viewable in midair, I knew back when I booked my flights months ago that, in the unlikely event of a Jets playoff game, a seat-back TV would be my only recourse in case the game fell on a Saturday. Of course, the impossible happened and I ended up watching the Jets-Bengals showdown on my miniature seat-mounted screen.

It was a great experience, especially with a flight full of cheering Jets fans (and a few disgruntled Giants/Bengals fans), but I wouldn't have been so lucky on Virgin America. Their spotty in-flight TV service had channels like MSNBC, but no NBC, and in-flight Wi-Fi would have been useless, since the NFL doesn't properly support Internet game-viewing.

At CES, when I saw Flo TV demonstrate its upcoming and very exciting collaboration with Mophie to bring live TV programming to the iPhone via a slip-on case, the representatives tried to entice me with promises of live sports. I knew better: the NBA, NHL, MLB, PGA, and NCAA football were all represented in some fashion, but not the NFL. FLO TV to bring live mobile TV to iPhone

The ways people use their iPhones are almost as diverse as the number of people using the device. Soon, you'll be able to add live TV to that list.

FLO TV and Mophie on Wednesday said at CES that they are partnering to develop a series of products that will bring live TV to the iPhone and iPod Touch. The products are expected to ship in the first half of 2010.

Qualcomm tries hand at handheld TV

Qualcomm will offer its FLO TV on a handheld television, putting this existing service on a dedicated device for the first time.

FLO TV, the Qualcomm-owned provider of a live mobile TV service, unveiled the FLO TV Personal Television on Tuesday, with availability slated for holiday season at retailers.

FLO, or "forward link only" technology, is designed for multicasting a large volume of rich multimedia content cost effectively to wireless subscribers. AT&T and Verizon already offer FLO TV on mobile phones in the U.S.

FLO TV goes national thanks to DTV transition

FLO TV, provider of the FLO TV live mobile TV service, announced last Friday that it plans to go national, with at least 39 additional markets by the end of the year. This was sparked by the DTV transition last Friday, which freed up the broadband spectrum needed for FLO TV's dedicated network.
