Wowed by the Woo WA7 headphone amplifier

The Woo Audio WA7 Fireflies is one of the most beautiful audio products I've ever used. For my money it approaches a level of design grace comparable to that of Apple products. The 5-inch cube headphone amplifier has two vacuum tubes protected by a thick glass cover. The WA7 also has a built-in 32-bit/192kHz USB digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and lots of custom-made parts, including dedicated nickel alloy output transformers. There's a 6.3mm jack for home-style headphones, and a 3.5mm jack for portable ones. That's noteworthy, as few headphone amps have both jack sizes. The … Read more

Unofficial 'Firefly' Serenity Lego kit goes on sale

Earlier in the year, a "Firefly" Serenity spaceship Lego playset gathered 10,000 supporters on Lego's Cuusoo site. Cuusoo is a little bit like Kickstarter for Lego geeks. Fans put kits together, gather votes, and have a shot at Lego putting their projects into production.

Lego Serenity, however, failed to pass Lego's review process to become reality. One reason Lego gave is that "Firefly" contains content that's inappropriate for its core target audience of children ages 6-11. I wonder what did it. Was it all the cursing in Chinese?

Fortunately, Lego and "Firefly" fans are much more resilient than that. The kit's designer is now offering eager builders an opportunity to buy the kit and make their own 2,186-piece Serenity ships.… Read more

'Firefly' fan builds ultimate Serenity Lego spaceship

Nearly 10 years after the debut of the sci-fi television show "Firefly" (and the follow-up 2005 movie "Serenity"), fans still express great interest in the series despite its short run.

Mild-mannered "Firefly" fan (and mechanical engineer) Adrian Drake decided to build the ultimate homage to the fallen show: a 70,000-piece Lego replica of the Serenity spaceship. … Read more

More iTunes 10 problems surface

As with any new software, there are bound to be some initial problems people experience, either with the software itself or with compatibility with other software and hardware. A few of these are surfacing and they include problems with media servers, music not syncing with iPhones, and music not importing from various sources.

Media servers

Many people have massive iTunes libraries they store on media server devices such as an external RAID array attached to a computer running media server software like FireFly. While these servers are technically supposed to work with iTunes, there may be some small changes in … Read more

Vestalife Firefly isn't as cutesy as the name implies

If you have a favorite animal, chances are you can now find it in the form of an iPod speaker. We've seen everything from pigs and pandas to cats and dogs. Heck, even insect lovers aren't left out in the cold, thanks to Vestalife's array of winged speakers.

One of these is the $130 Firefly, an iPod and iPhone speaker dock with a solid feel, compact design, and pleasing audio quality. For those who are after a different-looking portable speaker with a reasonable smattering of extras, this unit could fit the bill.

Inside CNET Labs 26: The Return

OK, that was kind of a longer break than we expected. Sorry about the whole no warning thing. We're back on at least a weekly schedule now, and because we've been away so long we're giving you over an hour of content even your mom would enjoy. If your mom's cool, that is.

First up, we have a little semi-impromptu discussion about one of our favorite shows Firefly. The nerds know what we're talking about. All of you who believe you're not nerds, first of all, wake up, then, get on board while the … Read more

Firefly lets everyone talk over your site

I've heard of death by a thousand cuts, but never cursors--that was until Firefly, a less-than-practical approach to letting your site visitors communicate with one another in real time. The service lets everyone see each other's cursors live as they zip around the page and lets them chat with one another via text. To strike up conversation, just start typing and a chat bubble will form above your cursor. Everyone's public chats are stored in a little queue, and frequent users can register to have their information and chat history saved to view at a later date.… Read more

Cingular and Verizon Wireless drop kiddie phones

Both Cingular and Verizon Wireless have pulled back from the kid-focused cell phone market as of this week. Verizon has completely halted production of the LG Migo VX1000, while Cingular will only sell its Firefly handsets through its online store (The Firefly will continue to be sold in big U.S. retailers like Wal-Mart and Target). Verizon says that it appears the LG VX3450L has taken the Migo's place -- the LG VX3450L is identical to the LG VX3450 but it has support for Chaperone, a Verizon service that lets parents keep close tabs on their kids. It appears … Read more
