AOL ad revenue up, but losses continue

AOL once again posted a difficult quarter as the company's revenue couldn't keep pace with last year's figures.

The online media company said today that it took in $542.2 million during the second quarter, down 8 percent compared to the $592.2 million it posted during the same period last year. That revenue decline held AOL in the red, with an $11.8 million loss for the quarter.

AOL's revenue declines during the quarter stemmed mainly from subscriptions to its Internet service. The company generated $201.3 million in subscription revenues during the period, down … Read more

Google's earnings lighter than expected

Updated throughout at 3:22 p.m. PDT following Google's earnings conference call.

Google's second-quarter revenue was up 24 percent compared to last year, but the company missed analysts' targets for earnings.

Excluding traffic-acquisition costs, Google took in $5.1 billion during the quarter, which ended June 30. That compares to around $4 billion during last year's second quarter, leaving out the money Google pays to its partners for traffic. Analysts polled by Yahoo Finance were expecting $4.99 billion in revenue for the quarter.

But reaction to earnings announcements tends to focus on the negative, and … Read more

Palm waiting for Pre to end revenue slump

Palm may have wowed the public with the demonstration of the Pre, but unfortunately for the company, no one can buy it yet.

The company announced Tuesday that its third fiscal quarter will be dismal, as had been expected. But it will be even worse than Wall Street had thought: Palm expects to record between $85 million and $90 million in revenue for the quarter that ended last week. Analysts had been expecting Palm would take in $157 million during the quarter.

It's a simple story for Palm: although it debuted to rave reviews, the Pre isn't ready, … Read more

Time Warner: Hiding AOL woes under Joker makeup

In an investor call Wednesday, Time Warner CEO Jeffrey Bewkes focused on the old media. You probably would have, too, if you could downplay AOL's dial-up business in favor of the late Heath Ledger's acclaimed performance in The Dark Knight.

Television and film at Time Warner are indeed beating Wall Street's expectations. The record-breaking Batman film, while its financials won't be reported until the third quarter, is on track to become the second highest-grossing movie of all time (behind 1997's Titanic). At the same time, HBO miniseries John Adams was a critically acclaimed hit, the … Read more

The $1.2 billion isn't as bad as it looks at first glance, but it's still pretty bad. In order to get out of the business of making graphics chips for handhelds and digital TV processors, AMD has to take a … Read more

Nvidia cuts estimates, citing product delays and failures

Nvidia's fortunes took a turn for the worse during the quarter, as slowing sales plus faulty products never add up to anything good.

The company announced Wednesday that revenue and gross margins for its second quarter will come in below its own projections, blaming a delay in the ramp of a new product, price cuts prompted by competitive pressures, and a general economic malaise. Analysts were expecting revenue of around $1.1 billion, but revenue now will be just $875 million to $900 million for its second quarter, which ends on July 27.

And then on top of that, … Read more

Palm's losses continue, but Centro proclaimed a hit

Palm reported sharp declines in revenue and earnings on Tuesday, as expected, but demand for its Centro smartphone is outpacing the company's ability to supply its carrier partners, according to executives.

We already knew that Palm's second-fiscal quarter, which ended November 30, was going to be a bad one. In fact, Palm has been laying off employees this month as a result of the earnings shortfall. The company confirmed the ugly numbers: It lost $9.6 million, or 9 cents a share, and revenue fell 11 percent to $349.6 million.

CEO Ed Colligan revealed that the mystery … Read more
