Shopping site Fancy pokes at rivals, touts mobile success

Social-media and e-commerce site Fancy may not have Pinterest's 25.3 million users or even Fab's 8 million users, but what Fancy lacks in user numbers, the company says, it's making up in mobile traffic and, most importantly, sales.

Fancy, which recently raised another $26.4 million from investors, released some new numbers and announced its new gift card offerings today, touting its mobile success while taking the opportunity to ding its competitors.

Fancy has more than 2 million registered users now, and while that's much less than wildly popular social-media site Pinterest or growing e-commerce … Read more

Apple reportedly in talks to buy small social commerce site

Apple is in talks to acquire social commerce site The Fancy to further entrench its position in the growing e-commerce arena, sources tell Business Insider.

Backed by co-founders of Facebook and Twitter, the site is a Pinterest rival that allows users to make lists of things they find interesting. The goal of the acquisition, BI reports, is to better leverage the 400 million or so credit cards Apple has on file at its iTunes store.

Apple CEO Tim Cook, who usually shies away from larger social-networking sites, reportedly started using The Fancy after meeting with the company's co-founder and … Read more

Fancy's plan to know what you want before you do (Q&A)

The social-media darling Pinterest is a not a site Joe Einhorn likes to talk about. In fact, Einhorn seems almost annoyed when I lump it together with his startup, New York-based Fancy. Sure, there are similarities: both sites offer ways for people to create streams of images they like -- rather, "pin," or "fancy" -- from around the Web. But Fancy has something more: a growing revenue stream.

Fancy, which is backed by an all-star cast of investors that includes Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes and Twitter and Square co-founder Jack Dorsey, added a shopping tool in … Read more

Zuckerberg joins Pinterest rival The Fancy

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg joined The Fancy this morning, piquing the interest of more than 100,000 followers by the late afternoon, Fast Company first noticed.

The site is known as a high-end competitor to Pinterest that has figured out how to integrate sales into its member's "fancy'd" images. Zuckerberg's first fancy'd item was an Extendo Library Shelving System, which is so fancy it's made in Italy.

This got us wondering: is Zuckerberg interested in more than collecting images of things he likes? The last time he joined a social network site like … Read more

Fancy pins from your Android device

With no official Pinterest app yet available for Android, there are swathes of users itching to pin their much-loved items while on the go. Enter Fancy, an Android app for another visual cataloging site, TheFancy.com.

Just like the popular Pinterest service, Fancy is about saving pictures of the people, places, and things you love. Rather than pinning items to pinboards, however, Fancy lets you "Fancy" items and save them to a list (or multiple lists). You can search for items, scroll through recently Fancy'd items, or look through the lists of users you follow. It's … Read more

Next-level platformers on iOS

If you haven't guessed already, I'm a big fan of platform games. Maybe it's my background of playing games from both the Mario and Sonic franchises or the sheer number of solid platformers in the iTunes App Store, but I simply can't get enough of them. There's just something charming to me about exploring a level, making all the right jumps, and trying to collect all the items to go on to next level.

There have been several popular platform games to come through the iTunes App Store, but as time goes on, I've noticed the genre evolving in interesting ways. Particularly with a few of the newer games, I'm seeing unique types of challenges being added that take the genre to places it hasn't been before.

This week's collected iOS apps are all platformers with something extra. The first uses an interesting foreground/background playing dynamic that adds to the action. The second is a continuous climber with added bonuses that keep trying to get higher and higher. The third offers tons of side challenges and secret areas for those who like to explore.… Read more

Lamborghini phone will drive you to poor house

If you like fast cars, you might get revved up by the Meridiist phone from luxury sports watch maker Tag Heuer. The company has teamed with Italian super sports car manufacturer Lamborghini to create the limited-edition phone, which flashes fancy dual LCD displays made from 60.5 carats of scratch-resistant sapphire crystal.

The phone's design references the Lamborghini Murcielago down to its signature on the battery cover--the same one as on the Murcielago LP 640's V12 engine block. The device has a hand-brushed stainless steel case and backlit mechanical stainless steel keypad customized with Automobili Lamborghini's trademark … Read more

It's not lame; it's lah-may

To continue our celebration of Bread Month at The Brooklyn Kitchen, a shop in my neighborhood that's the best go-to spot for appliances and kitchen gadgets, I'm introducing you to this odd-looking blade that breadmakers know as a lame (lah-may).

Maybe you've already been introduced to this curved-blade tool, also known as a grignette. But if you're like me and it's new to you, here's the deal: this little guy is responsible for the pretty patterns that show up in the crust of freshly baked breads like baguettes and round boules. Chefs use the … Read more
