Meet Spoutnik, the space-age microwave

America has fallen behind in the space race, folks. Oh sure, NASA may have little dune buggies rolling around up on Mars, but can Curiosity or Opportunity pop a bag of popcorn? Didn't think so. That makes it kind of hard to watch such outer-space classics such as "2001: A Space Odyssey" or "Spaceballs." There is only way to settle in with a bag of popcorn for a true sci-fi experience, and that is with a space-age microwave. And it's the U.K. that has it.

The Fagor Spoutnik is a microwave on its … Read more

Electric steamer steams more than veggies

Convenience is something that practically every kitchen gadget strives for. However, some do it better than others. When it comes right down to it, the first factor to consider is accessibility. When a product reduces the amount of steps necessary to get to some end result, the entire process is made more accessible. And when it comes to creating healthy dishes, anything that makes it easier can only be a good thing.

The Fagor Electric Steamer is an electric countertop appliance that makes steaming vegetables an automatic process. Just fill the reservoir with water, set the timer, and wait. Though … Read more

Portable cooktop offers twice the convenience

What's better than a portable cooktop that can be used to heat up food anywhere? Why, that would be two portable cooktops that can be used to heat up food anywhere, of course. Or to be more precise, one unit that has two heating elements. About the only thing that could be better than that would be if the double-duty cooktop heated via induction. Well, the Fagor Portable Double Induction Cooktop combines these factors and more.

Mirror, mirror, on the fridge

Kitchens, being the nerve center of the house, tend to reflect the personalities of those who live within. From the cluttered to the clean, how we outfit the kitchen says a lot about a person. But, as they say, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder," and what appears as clean to one, might look sterile to another. Same thing could be said the other way around: cluttered means "homey," more often than not. One thing for sure that all kitchens have in common is a desire for appliances that work well and look good … Read more

Dishwasher thinks inside the box

Big-box kitchen appliances don't tend to push the boundaries too often; at least when it comes to how they integrate into the surroundings. Sure, a particular model may stand out from the pack with innovative features, but at the end of the day, refrigerators, dishwashers, and ranges tend to play it safe. Often this is due to necessity: it is not much of a stretch to say that cabinetry is often built around these appliances. There are times though--at least in the case of the dishwasher--one could look to install somewhere besides under the countertop.

Lotus finds a buyer for its hybrid engine

Last year Lotus announced a new engine designed specifically as an onboard generator for electric vehicles, giving them range beyond what batteries can provide. That engine was more than a concept, as the Fagor Ederlan Group, a European-based supplier of power train and chassis equipment to the automotive industry, announced an agreement with Lotus for production and sales of the engine.

Lotus' three-cylinder 1.2-liter engine combines block, head, and exhaust manifold in a single piece for efficient construction and low maintenance. The company showed it off as a component of the Evora 414E Hybrid at this year's Geneva … Read more

Pressure cooker holds own in modern kitchens

Convenience in the kitchen takes many forms. Sometimes it's all about multitasking appliances; sometimes it's about foods and ingredients that come prepped.  Speed, of course, is frequently a factor, as time is always of the essence. And sometimes it's a bit of all of the above.

The Fagor Futuro 10-Quart Pressure Cooker/Canner combines speed and convenience into one unit. Easy to use, the stovetop unit reduces cooking time by increasing pressure inside the pot. Just add your favorite liquid along with your ingredients, lock down the lid, and choose between a low and high setting. … Read more

Cook it fast or cook it slow

If two is better than one, then three has to trump two, a concept that can be applied to kitchen appliances--certainly when it comes to their versatility. As far as kitchen appliances are concerned, design quite often determines utility, and the best ones are naturally capable of many different tasks. With sometimes the cookery in question being capable of vastly different tasks.

The Fagor 3-in-1 Electric Multicooker provides the versatility that is so important in the modern kitchen. With the ability to act as a pressure cooker, slow cooker or a rice cooker, the 6-quart countertop appliance is an everyday … Read more

Induction-powered hot plate isn't hot

Hot plates aren't hot any more. At least if you are calling portable induction burners hot plates. Which doesn't really make sense, because, well, they don't get hot. Cooking via induction does not heat up the surface material. Instead, heat is transferred directly into the cooking vessel via magnetic induction. All of this means that food cooks more efficiently and safer, to boot. Both of which are qualities that make sense in any portable cooking surface.

The Fagor Portable Induction Burner is a small, lightweight device that can be easily (and safely) transported. It measures only 14 … Read more

An oven-opening option

In my first apartment, the kitchen was tiny. Because of the way the cabinets were constructed, I literally could not open the oven all the way: if I pulled the door down most of the way, it ran into the cabinet's hinge. I remember thinking that if the oven opened in the same direction as the cabinet--if I could pull the door out from the side, rather than down from the top--I wouldn't be having this problem.

Apparently Fagor was listening (to my thoughts). They've just come out with two versions of a side-opening oven, one for … Read more
