How to adjust the frequency of Facebook alert e-mails

There it is, an e-mail from Facebook telling you to expect less e-mail from Facebook. Seems counterproductive, doesn't it? Either way, Facebook has started rolling out a new feature that limits the e-mail frequency of alerts to a summary of popular stories.

We know the pain of excessive e-mail alerts all too well, which makes this a welcome change, so long as the e-mailed summaries are few and far between. But, for some users, the old e-mail alert system is what works best and what they are used to--and what they ultimately prefer. With that in mind, we are going to show you how to turn off the new e-mail frequency feature.

The 404 708: Where we want DrCoolsex to give us a full-body physical (podcast)

Dustin Drury of the comedy group DrCoolSEx joins the show today to talk about their latest viral video about one of our favorite childhood shows, "Doug," on Nickelodeon. Joining us as well is Scott Stein and Angela Inferrera. Where is Justin? A couple of a printer reviews needed to take priority...

You may only remember Doug, if you're in your mid-20s, but it was certainly a childhood favorite of ours. If not, YouTube it! While you're at it, check out DrCoolSex's parody trailer of a grown-up Doug. You might remember them from the viral movie trailer about Mario Kart.

DrCoolSex videos seem to be out of the ordinary on YouTube these days. Especially given the recent news that every single minute, users upload 35 hours of video! The Internet certainly allows users to take away the power from publishers, but to be frank, a lot of it seems to be crap.

We get to one voice mail about show segments. If you haven't noticed, we're not exactly the most reliable people on pretty much anything. But we are trying! Maybe if someone wants to be an intern? Finally, we get to a story about Facebook possibly offering e-mail to all of its users on Monday. Most of us agree that Gmail works great for us, but I'm thinking that every tween out there is pretty much going to think I'm lame if I don't use Facebook e-mail.

Oops! Hack lets anybody join the MySpace network on Facebook

I do not work for MySpace. But my Facebook profile now says I do, thanks to what appears to be a sneaky little flaw in MySpace's recently launched e-mail client.

Professional networks on Facebook are intended to be limited to employees, and require a corporate e-mail address to which Facebook sends a confirmation e-mail to verify accuracy. But when MySpace launched MySpace Mail this summer, it made e-mail addresses with the myspace.com domain--which is also used internally for corporate e-mail--available to any members of the News Corp.-owned social network.

A reader tipped off CNET News to the … Read more

Study: Social-media junkies use e-mail more

Although social networking may be seen as a personal-communications alternative to e-mail, those that find themselves on several social-media sites throughout the day generally spend more time reading and writing e-mail messages than those that don't engage in as much social networking, according to a study released on Monday by Nielsen.

After considering the impact social networks have on Web surfers' activities online, Nielsen tested its assumption that "consumption of social media decreases e-mail use" to determine how social networking has impacted e-mail.

To do so, the research firm broke its test population into four groups based … Read more

Facebook redesigns friend request e-mails

Facebook has quietly changed the way its friend request e-mails look.

Instead of the old, simple text e-mails sent to Facebook users whenever someone wanted to add them as a friend, the new friend request e-mails feature the familiar blue header with the Facebook logo at the top of the message. Below that, the same text, "(Facebook user's name) added you as a friend on Facebook. We need to confirm that you know (the user) in order for you to be friends on Facebook," is featured.

To the right of that message is a small yellow box … Read more

A facelift for Facebook in-boxes, but is it enough?

Well, according to a post on the official Facebook blog, the social network's messaging feature is getting a much-needed revamp from its cruddy, bare-bones state. Select users have the new in-box now; it'll be rolling out to everyone else over the next few weeks.

The catch is that there aren't actually very many new features, just a better presentation of existing ones for the most part. You'll now be able to accomplish such technological marvels as filter your in-box for unread messages (wow!) and flag unwanted messages as spam.

There's also a more clearly delineated … Read more
