'Star Wars' glasses: Use the four eyes, Luke!

There are some places where it's not appropriate to wear a Wampa skin "Star Wars" dress covered in fake blood, but you still want to express your fandom through fashion. That's when you whip out your surprisingly subtle Darth Vader glasses.

Japanese company Aigan has introduced a collection of officially licensed "Star Wars" eyeglasses. Choose the Force with Luke Skywalker or R2-D2 styles. Go for the Dark Side with Darth Vader or Stormtrooper models. Can't decide which side you're on? No problem. There's a Boba Fett pair, too.… Read more

Eyejusters double-lens glasses offer DIY vision correction

Fixed-lens glasses are so last year -- if U.K.-based company Eyejusters has anything to say about it, that is.

Eyejusters' "SlideLens" technology enables users to turn a dial on one of the glasses' temple arms to slide two lenses across one another and thereby adjust the focus. That just might help some of the world's estimated 670 million people who need glasses but don't have them manipulate their own prescriptions.

Eyejusters calculates that its two types of glasses -- positive power (to correct near-sightedness) and negative power (to correct far-sightedness) -- could help roughly 90 percent of people whose poor vision can be corrected using glasses.… Read more

Prototype Google Glasses spotted in the wild

Sergey Brin was spotted this evening sporting a pair of Google Glasses, the augmented-reality specs the Web giant is working on.

Brin was photographed wearing a prototype pair of the eyeglasses while he posed with tech evangelist Robert Scoble this evening at a charity event in San Francisco.

"The Google Glasses are real! Here is a set on @sergeybrinn cofounder of Googl @ Palace Hotel, San Francisco," Scoble wrote, including the picture in a Twitter post. "They look very light weight. Not much different than a regular set of glasses," he wrote in another tweet.

But that … Read more

Is Google working on high-tech spectacles?

Google is reportedly designing eyeglasses that could display information on the world around us.

The high-tech specs purportedly would tap into Google's cloud-based location services to convey details about the user's surroundings. The visual information would then appear as a 3D augmented reality computer display.

Known as wearable head-up displays (HUDs), the glasses are reportedly in the late prototype stage, says tech news site 9to5Google. Based on information from one of its sources, the site describes the glasses as similar in appearance to conventional eyeglasses but with a few buttons on the arms. The actual display technology is … Read more

Jobs wannabes snatch up Steve's iconic frames

The recently released biography of late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs isn't the only thing that's selling well in recent weeks. Apparently shoppers are snatching up the tech icon's favorite eyeglasses too.

Sales of German-made Lunor Classic Rund PP eyeglasses have "dramatically increased," since Jobs' death. That's according to The Wall Street Journal, which talked to Power Bloom, a distributor of the $450 eyewear. A Power Bloom representative told the outlet that the numbers sold are in the hundreds, representing a spike from typical sales of that particular model.

The glasses, which are a simple … Read more

Dial A for adaptive eyeglasses for the masses

It's costly when you have to regularly change your prescription lenses, particularly with heavy computer use leading to astigmatism. So the idea of adaptive lenses whose strength can be adjusted with a twist of the dial on the side is certainly a novel and inspired one.

Adlens' adaptive-lens eyeglasses have hollow lenses with a clear plastic sheet stretched across on the inside. Twist the dial, and fluid pumps in between the sheet and lens, creating a high refractive index. More fluid means more curvature, which means more powerful lenses. When the oil is pumped back out, the lens curvature … Read more

DIY eco eyeglasses made out of a Sprite bottle

You've heard of Coke bottle glasses. But you probably haven't heard of Sprite bottle glasses.

That's the concept that Suning Chen from China came up for the "RE-think + RE-cycle" design competition organized by Designboom way back in 2005. I just happened to come across this little DIY project while doing a Google search on PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles. (A public relations representative sent me a release on an upcoming Ecogear backpack made out of recycled PET bottles and I wasn't sure what PET stood for).

Naturally, you could make these glasses out of any … Read more

The Cheapskate's Greatest Hits:
Coupons, MP3s, eyeglasses

I've been at the helm of The Cheapskate for about 18 months now. I don't know how that works out in dog years, but I figure it's the musical equivalent of cutting six or seven albums. (Don't ask me where that math comes from. I was an English major, and I'm working toward a metaphor, dammit.)

Consequently, I decided it was time for a "Greatest Hits" post--a collection of some of my favorite money-saving tips. If you're new to the blog or just missed these the first time around, I hope you'… Read more

Save a small fortune on prescription eyeglasses

If you have the courage to look closely at my photo, you'll notice I wear glasses. The pair in that pic cost me a few hundred dollars--fairly typical, right? Maybe not: The pair I'm wearing right now set me back $21.85--frames, lenses, and shipping.

Yes, they're prescription. Yes, they have the all-important antiglare coating. And, no, they're not ugly plastic "cheaters" like they sell at the dollar store. In fact, they're stylish metal-alloy frames with a blue coating (to match my eyes, ahem).

I scored this deal from Zenni Optical, one of several Web outlets that sells prescription eyeglasses on the cheap--the really, really cheap.

Other popular stores for four-eyes include 39 Dollar Glasses, Goggles4U, and Optical4Less. Although ordering glasses online has its pitfalls, I think the savings greatly outweigh the risks.

Zenni, the only company I've tried thus far, offers a wide selection of frames, with prices ranging from $8-19, lenses included. All you need is your current prescription, which you can get from your optometrist.… Read more

Performance glasses vow to save your fried eyes

Six out of seven people here at Crave Asia are bespectacled, and the last time I checked, everyone had their eyes glued to at least a 19-inch LCD monitor. Some have it worse with gigantic plasma screens, while others have to squint at pathetic QVGA displays.

It doesn't take an Einstein to know that our eyes go through an obscene amount of stress daily. Less work and more play obviously wouldn't sit well with our editors or HR policies. And citing risks of developing Digital Eye Fatigue or Computer Vision Syndrome, at best, will earn you a few … Read more
