Flip phones to flip for (roundup)

Don't get me wrong, I still love my smartphones as much as any modern 21st-century kid. But there's something about whipping out a flip phone and then snapping it closed that is very gratifying and nostalgic. And while many phone manufacturers pump out high-tech handsets every season, it's nice to see that once in a while, a simple flip phone still makes it through the pipeline.

Virgin Mobile adds Samsung Montage, Entro to PayLo lineup

Virgin Mobile and Samsung unveiled today two new wallet-friendly handsets for its PayLo portfolio. The Samsung Montage, the more advanced of the two, is a feature phone with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a 2-megapixel camera, e-mail and Web access, and threaded text messaging. It also supports Bluetooth and up to 32GB of external storage.

The aptly named Entro is a simple flip phone with texting capabilities, speakerphone, and Internet access.

Samsung's Entro goes on sale starting today for $14.99, and the Montage becomes available in stores on August 20 for $49.99.

We caught wind of a prototype back in 2004, when Israeli physics professor Glen Guttman unveiled his compact A/C solution that rides pillion and siphons off the motorcycle battery to hose cold or heated air to a thermal vest worn under the motorcyclist's jacket. A wireless controller mounted on the bars controls the temperature.

Now it looks like the invention is finally moving out of cold storage, with trials being conducted that should lead to a commercial rollout. Marketed under Guttman's company EntroSys as BikeAir-1, it'll be interesting to see the cost of keeping cool on the road. Video after the jump.… Read more
