Christmas surprise for Droid Razr, Razr Maxx

The original Droid Razr and Droid Razr Maxx have begun receiving their over-the-air update to Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, according to a report at Android Central.

The update is clocking in at more than 300MB, so it's recommended that you upgrade over Wi-Fi only, unless you've got a high or nonexistent mobile data cap. Many people are reporting in the Android Central forums that their updates are failing to complete install on first try, too.

To check if you've got the update, go to Settings, About Phone, and then System Update.

The update comes on … Read more

Friday Poll: What's the best tech product of 2012?

There can be only one. The Samsung Galaxy S3 lopped the heads off of all comers to claim the top spot in CNET's roundup of the best tech products of 2012.

CNET editors placed the contenders in an imaginary fight cage and let them battle it out like so many boxing robots. Only five devices were still standing at the end. The iPhone 5 was left holding the tossed-off bridal bouquet while the Samsung Galaxy S3 hopped into a limo for its honeymoon with the "best tech product of 2012" designation.… Read more

Motorola Droid Razr Maxx

Much of the talk about smartphones in 2012 centered around swifter processing power and 4G data. Mobile addicts know, however, that all the fancy features in the world are useless if your battery runs dry.

Luckily handset-maker Motorola decided to make battery life a serious priority this year in its Droid series phones on Verizon. First the Droid Razr Maxx broke all the run time records with its massive 3,300 mAh battery. A little while later, Motorola followed up with the Droid Razr Maxx HD, which used the same legendary 3,300mAh battery but upped the ante with fresh … Read more

Moto muddies the Razr HD waters

commentary I'm not sure I understand what Motorola was doing last week when it announced three Droid Razr models for the remainder of 2012.

On one hand, I get that an iconic company like Moto wants to show that it's still in the game. And I understand the benefit in giving customers choices. In this case, however, the number of choices is simply too much. While I see the value in both the Droid Razr M and the Droid Razr Maxx HD, I don't see a need for the Droid Razr HD.

Looking at the official specifications … Read more

Motorola gets new direction, lease on life under Google

Say hello to the new Motorola Mobility.

Motorola, which struggled as a standalone company competing in the cutthroat smartphone business, gets a second chance under Google, a parent with loads of cash and even more patience.

The changes start with Dennis Woodside, an ex-Googler who now runs Motorola. Under Woodside, the company reshuffled and brought on new key managers, shifted resources away from its basic phone business, and focused more on the smartphones it believes resonates with power users.

Today's announcement of not one, but three different Droid Razr smartphones -- Motorola's first as a part of Google … Read more
