BlackBerry co-founder and former CEO Mike Lazaridis has veered from mobile devices and set his sights on quantum technology.

This technology is so fascinating to him that he and fellow BlackBerry co-founder Doug Fregin have launched a $100 million investment fund, called Quantum Valley Investments, to work on commercial applications for breakthroughs in quantum science, according to the Wall Street Journal.

But, what exactly are breakthroughs in quantum science?

According to Lazaridis, one need look no further than Star Trek.

"There's this buzz around the world that this quantum information science is starting to bear fruit," Lazaridis … Read more

New images of Steve Jobs during Apple founder's early years

Starting in 1986, photojournalist Doug Menuez began taking photos of Steve Jobs, then in exile from Apple and working at his next startup, NeXt. Jobs was just one of the execs Menuez followed around as part of a 15-year chronicle of Silicon Valley during a formative era in its history. But the pictures never saw the light of day after Jobs had a change of heart.

Until now. The photos went up on display as part of the "Moscow Photobiennale: 'Fearless genius' inaugural exhibition."

"The Russians have a long tradition of scientific and engineering excellence and seemed … Read more

Perhaps it's happened to you in a meeting or on a date. Perhaps you're one of those inconsiderate people who never obeys the plea to silence your cell phone in the movie theater.

But you might think that, before you go live to present your Final Four predictions on ESPN, you might have remembered to turn your cell phone off.

Not everyone, it seems. For here is Doug Gottlieb, who used to play for Oklahoma State as well as Notre Dame, inadvertently creating one of the more touching technological moments in TV history.

When he hears Super Mario … Read more

Latest Ask.com revamp all about answers

OAKLAND, Calif.--It's fairly rare in 2010 to walk into a technology company where the first thing presented to visitors is a whiteboard covered in multicolor Post-It notes.

But that's exactly what lies just beyond the receptionist's desk at Ask.com, the venerable yet beleaguered Internet company in the middle of yet another strategy shift. The sticky notes are actually part of the company's product-development workflow, giving everyone a visual representation of the number of balls in the air at any given time, not just those logged into the project management software.

The 404 708: Where we want DrCoolsex to give us a full-body physical (podcast)

Dustin Drury of the comedy group DrCoolSEx joins the show today to talk about their latest viral video about one of our favorite childhood shows, "Doug," on Nickelodeon. Joining us as well is Scott Stein and Angela Inferrera. Where is Justin? A couple of a printer reviews needed to take priority...

You may only remember Doug, if you're in your mid-20s, but it was certainly a childhood favorite of ours. If not, YouTube it! While you're at it, check out DrCoolSex's parody trailer of a grown-up Doug. You might remember them from the viral movie trailer about Mario Kart.

DrCoolSex videos seem to be out of the ordinary on YouTube these days. Especially given the recent news that every single minute, users upload 35 hours of video! The Internet certainly allows users to take away the power from publishers, but to be frank, a lot of it seems to be crap.

We get to one voice mail about show segments. If you haven't noticed, we're not exactly the most reliable people on pretty much anything. But we are trying! Maybe if someone wants to be an intern? Finally, we get to a story about Facebook possibly offering e-mail to all of its users on Monday. Most of us agree that Gmail works great for us, but I'm thinking that every tween out there is pretty much going to think I'm lame if I don't use Facebook e-mail.

Vevo--a music site we didn't need

Vevo, the new music-video site operated by Google (which owns YouTube) and co-owned by three of the four major labels (EMI, Sony, and Universal; Warner Bros. not participating), launched on Tuesday to some fanfare in New York. Big music celebs rubbed elbows with Google and label execs in the kind of self-congratulatory bash that only the entertainment industry can pull off.

Maybe that's too harsh, but I visited the site on Wednesday and I quite honestly can't figure out who or what it's for. It's got music videos, but only from three of the four majors … Read more
