LG Doubleplay review: A solution waiting for a problem

We'll admit it: The LG Doubleplay's bizarre design just doesn't work for us.

But if you disregard the design, the LG Doubleplay is actually a remarkably solid Android smartphone. It ships with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and has plenty of great features like Wi-Fi calling, mobile hot-spot capability, and support for T-Mobile's 4G/HSPA+ network. We're also mostly impressed with the 1GHz Qualcomm Scorpion processor, and LG's Android overlay does not offend us.

Yet, we can't help but be put off by the subdisplay set right smack dab in the middle of the keyboard. We understand the multitasking reasoning behind it, but we don't think it's necessary--it feels like a solution waiting for a problem. The dual displays might even be a big contributor to the rather lackluster battery life. If you're willing to suspend your prejudices, you're welcome to take a chance with the LG Doubleplay for $99.99 after a new two-year service agreement with T-Mobile, but excuse us if we don't share your enthusiasm.… Read more

T-Mobile seeing double with LG Doubleplay

T-Mobile made it official today and introduced the LG Doubleplay, a unique Android Gingerbread smartphone with dual touch screens.

The Doubleplay features a slider design with a main 3.5-inch touch screen on front and a secondary 2-inch touch screen located in the middle of the split QWERTY keyboard. T-Mobile and LG say that the displays can work in tandem and independently of each other and will allow for better multitasking.

The LG Doubleplay isn't the first smartphone to have two touch screens. In April, Sprint debuted the Kyocera Echo, which had two 3.5-inch displays.

Leaked LG Doubleplay shots show unique design

A pair of press-ready images of an upcoming LG handset have surfaced, giving us a clear look at the unconventional keyboard with a secondary display. The pictures tell us that the phone, operating under the code name of LG Flip II, will carry the more official name of T-Mobile Doubleplay.

According to a recently leaked road map, this LG smartphone will arrive on November 2, alongside four additional Android devices.
