Making sense of the PS4 game lineup

NEW YORK--So the world didn't exactly get what it wanted out of Sony's PlayStation 4 debut tonight. There was no sight of the actual console itself and details about its specific release date and price were also nowhere to be seen.

Sony's team-up with Gaikai is sure to net some interesting ideas and implementations with cloud streaming, the sharing of game screens, remote play, and other concoctions, but the games themselves were what made the biggest impact.

Those pondering the PS4's gaming prowess were served an interesting dish. Ten or so major developers were represented in … Read more

The making of Bungie's Halo successor: Destiny

BELLEVUE, Wash.--Halo, the multibillion-dollar-grossing video game franchise, set an incredibly high bar for its creator, Bungie, to meet with its next title.

"After Halo, a bunch of us thought, 'What comes next?'" Bungie co-founder Jason Jones told a group of journalists visiting Bungie's Bellevue, Wash., headquarters Wednesday.

Jones and Bungie's leadership, who sold the company to Microsoft in 2000 and then spun it out of the software giant in 2007, wanted to find a project worthy of the groundbreaking work in Halo. They wanted to come up with not just a new game, but a … Read more

Google land grab hints at data center expansion

Google's second-quarter outlay on land, technology, and buildings suggests the search giant may be planning further data centers.

In total, Google spent $917 million on capital expenditures in the second quarter, the company reported in its quarterly earnings yesterday. The "majority" of the money went on "land and building purchases," the company said.

The news marks the first time Google has specifically broken out land purchases in an earnings release since the third quarter of 2005.

In May, Google said it was considering increasing its data center footprint in Europe.

Simple feng shui analysis

MB Feng Shui Lo Shu gives users an analysis of the missing elements of their life based on their birth date. Although we have no idea if the program properly uses the principles of feng shui, it does provide an analysis with suggestions for improvement.

As with all Mystic Board software, the first screen is a clutter of Mystic Board ads. On the next screen, users enter their birth date and gender. The program then provides a diagram of squares labeled with numbers and directions, but users who aren't familiar with feng shui will get no help in understanding … Read more

Lucky number generator

MB Numerology Pro Software provides users with a tool to look at their lucky numbers from every conceivable angle. While it has an intuitive structure and simple navigation, this program's results may actually overwhelm.

This program's interface is very intuitive, and focuses on a series of boxes that can be clicked open after one's personal information is quickly inputted. Even if users aren't sure what the boxes represent, numerologically, they should have confidence in this program. We would have liked to see a more comprehensive Help file, but overall we were impressed with its simple interface. … Read more

Astrological destiny predictor

MB Feng Shui Ba Zi provides a program that sheds light on a user's destiny. However, without much direction, we predict users will need outside sources to translate their future.

Thankfully, this program could not have a much simpler interface. Users can enter their personal information in very plain boxes and pull-down menus for dates. From there, navigating the information is much easier than interpreting what it might mean. We were disappointed to find that the Help file did not give us much information beyond the program's core functions. The program asks users for their birthday, time of … Read more
