Skype to serve display ads to Window users

Skype said today that users who do not have Skype Credit or subscriptions will now see advertisements in their call windows when they are making one-on-one audio calls using Skype for Windows.

Analyst reports 67 percent of Asian iPhone market untapped by Apple

According to a new analysis from Morgan Stanley's Katy Huberty, Apple has yet to explore nearly 67 percent of the potential iPhone market in Asia.

The analysis, presented in a note to investors, suggests that only 22 percent of Asian carriers are selling Apple's iPhone. Asian carriers represent nearly 10 percent of world's highest smartphone penetration demographic (25- to 34-year-olds), about 655 million people. Africa represents the second highest amount at 153 million people.

The 78 percent of Asian carriers that are yet to offer the iPhone represent about 67 percent of that area's subscribers. A … Read more

Study: Film had varied effect on Facebook's image

Opinions were mixed as to whether the film "The Social Network," which topped the U.S. box office charts for the second week in a row, would have a positive or negative effect on audiences' perceptions of Facebook as a company. On one hand, CEO Mark Zuckerberg is depicted as a harsh megalomaniac; on the other, the well-received movie is a sexy, stylized look at Silicon Valley that certainly makes hacking and engineering seem a bit more titillating than it is in real life.

Facebook's audience is diverse--carve it up, advertisers

Facebook has released a demographic study of its 350 million users. The upshot: Facebook isn't just for white and Asian people anymore.

In fact, Facebook's demographics resemble the base of Internet users. That finding makes a lot of sense because Facebook, like AOL way back when and Google today, represents a proxy for the Internet and population overall. If you're on the Internet you've probably stumbled on Facebook. In the early days of Facebook, the site was dominated by white and Asian folks.

In a note, Facebook walks through its analysis and how it compared surnames … Read more

So is Facebook for old people now or what?

You've probably heard it already: New numbers from iStrategyLabs indicate that in the apparent reversal of the plot of any '90s-era kiddie caper flick, grown-ups are taking over Facebook.

According to iStrategyLabs, from January to July of 2009, even though the population of Facebook members over the age of 55 grew 513.7 percent, the site now sees 16.5 percent fewer high-school users, and 21.7 percent fewer college users. Which, naturally, is cause for panic because when the cool kids leave it's all totally over. Or so the common wisdom says.

Google tool lets advertisers scrutinize site stats

Google announced a tool called Ad Planner on Tuesday that lets advertisers find Web sites whose visitors match various demographic attributes.

"Enter demographics and sites associated with your target audience, and the tool will return information about sites (both on and off the Google content network) that your audience is likely to visit," the company said on its AdWords blog.

The tool, which was expected, also can show in detail how many people visit a particular Web site. The tool competes with offerings from companies including ComScore and Nielsen Online.

Right now, Google's tool is available by … Read more

YouTube tool details video demographics

YouTube now lets those who have uploaded videos see details about the types of people watching them.

The company has added a demographics section to an analytics tool called Insight that YouTube released in March.

Insight now has a "demographics tab that displays view count information broken down by age group (such as ages 18-24), gender, or a combination of the two, to help you get a better understanding of the makeup of your YouTube audience," Google said in a blog posting Thursday.

The move dovetails with Google's high priority of making more money from YouTube through … Read more

CES: The guys who decide what gets on the shelves, and yes, they're guys.

So what do the other fellow geeks at CES look like? Predominantly youngish to middle-aged male (white or Asian), blazer and jeans, and almost certainly on a cell phone. Vendors at the CES have certainly kept that in mind. Whether its attractive women wandering the floor (I still have no idea what the cheerleaders were selling), sports stars opining on this year's Superbowl at Samsung (Randall Cunningham), or cars galore (everywhere you look), vendors know their market, but in what sense? Of course there are women attendees here, and of course these decision-makers will sift through market data and … Read more
