Dyson levels up in the U.S. with two new '2 Tier Radial' vacuums

The inside of a vacuum cleaner is no place to be. Luckily, most of us will never have to endure such a place. The detritus we create in daily living, however, is another story. Not only do we want dust, dirt, and pet hair to be subjected to the internal whirlwind of a vacuum cleaner, we want it to stay there. At least until it's time to empty the bin.

Emptying the bin may be the last step in the journey for particulate matter, but other side of the story is just beginning. The bagless technology that Dyson uses … Read more

When it comes to grounded jetliners, the 787 is no DC-10

Two weeks ago after the Federal Aviation Administration and other aviation agencies grounded the Boeing 787, the new airliner remains out of service around the world.

It's a blow for Boeing, which since 2004 has banked much of the its resources on developing the new and cutting-edge airplane. With its composite materials, new engines, raked wings, and an increased reliance on electricity to power internal systems, the 787 Dreamliner promises big leaps in and fuel efficiency and cabin comfort. And when it made its first commercial flight in October, 2011, four years after first rolling out of the factory, … Read more

AC/DC finally coming to iTunes

AC/DC, known for such heavy metal hits as "Back in Black," "Thunderstruck," and Highway to Hell" will finally be rocking iTunes.

Apple announced today that the band has made its entire catalog available for download. Fans can buy the whole albums or individual songs. AC/DC was one of the high-profile acts, a group that once included The Beatles and Kid Rock, choosing not to distribute their music at online stores.

The partnership is a stark reversal from 2008, when AC/DC refused to sell individual songs. Brian Johnson, the group's lead singer … Read more

Intel's tiny desktop PC for DIYers coming this month

Online retailers will begin selling a 4.5-inch-wide Intel-branded desktop PC for do-it-yourselfers later this month.

The product name is a mouthful -- the "Next Unit of Computing," or NUC for short.

"It's geared more to home theater/home media center," said Intel spokesperson Dan Snyder. One usage scenario he suggested: slap it on the back of a wide-screen display (see photo below).

But note: as Anandtech points out, it is truly a bare-bones system aimed at DIYers. … Read more

Microsoft kills Messenger to push Skype

Wednesday's CNET Update is app happy:

Today's tech news roundup bids farewell to Windows Live Messenger. Microsoft is pushing users to use Skype instead for instant messaging. The latest Skype update lets users transfer contacts from Messenger.

The new Xbox SmartGlass app is now available for Apple devices. The app turns an iOS device into a second screen for navigating through Xbox menus and media, and it's easier to type with an iOS keyboard. Some games have extra features for SmartGlass, like Halo 4, Dance Central 3 and Forza Horizon.

If you're wondering about an app for Microsoft Office, … Read more

"It's not a move [away from Comixology], it's an … Read more

Intel intros high-endurance solid-state drive

Intel on Monday introduced its latest solid-state drive, the DC S3700, which offers up to 800GB of storage space and will become available in early 2013.

The chip maker says the drive incorporates a new technology called High Endurance Technology (HET) that leads to much better endurance. Basically, the new drive can handle 10 full drive writes per day and still last a full 5-year life span for its lowest capacities. For the highest, 800GB capacity, this translates into a life span of almost 200 years should you choose to use it for video editing constantly.

The reason endurance is … Read more

Neil deGrasse Tyson locates Superman's home planet

Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Superman's home star system! Thanks to astrophysicist and geek all-star Neil deGrasse Tyson, Krypton has been located within the known universe.

Tyson teamed with DC Comics to track down a Krypton-like system that matches hints from the comics. He found a fitting red dwarf in the constellation Corvus (the crow) in the southern sky, a mere 27.1 light years from Earth. … Read more

Dyson DC44 Animal: The ultimate in hand vacs gets an upgrade and a price bump

Last year, Dyson released a very high-tech -- and pricey -- hand vacuum, the Digital Slim DC35. That model started out at $350 but has since come down to $300.

Now Dyson is serving up a new hand vac, the Digital Slim DC44 Animal, which improves upon the earlier model, offering better battery life (20 minutes of "fade-free" power instead of 15 minutes), increased suction, and an upgraded attachment for sucking up pet hair (there's an Animal version of the DC35 that costs $329). While those are certainly welcome upgrades, I'm not sure they merit a … Read more

Batman, DC Comics drop in on iBooks

Digital comic books continue to proliferate beyond comics-specific apps like Comixology as Apple's iBooks gets its first DC Comics book: the recently published, original graphic novel Batman: Earth One.

Batman: Earth One, which retells the Batman origin with some startling differences -- ready for faithful butler Alfred to wield a gun, anybody? -- continues DC Entertainment's strategy of selling graphic novels through marketplaces that focus on traditional books and magazines, while the single-issue monthlies are available through the company's branded iOS and Android apps. Its digital release comes on the heels of the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con, … Read more
