Tumblr CEO says average cost of ad campaign tops six figures

NEW YORK -- Companies are spending, on average, "north of six figures" on advertising campaigns on Tumblr, the CEO of the blogging platform said Wednesday.

David Karp, speaking at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference in New York, noted that advertising remains Tumblr's biggest challenge, but it's seeing good traction with its efforts.

"Budgets are starting to ratchet up," Karp said. He noted that "some of the best advertisers in the world" are turning to Tumblr.

Tumblr sits alongside the Internet elites in terms of audience, but the 6-year-old blogging medium has lagged far … Read more

Tumblr jumps into advertising with two feet

Tumblr has resisted putting ads on its site for years, but little by little the idea of advertising has become more acceptable. Now, the company seems to be jumping in with two feet.

The microblogging site has hired sales guru Lee Brown, according to All Things D. Brown joins Tumblr from his position of senior vice president of national sales at Groupon. Before that, he was the vice president of East Coast U.S. and Canada sales for Yahoo.

Brown is slated to report to Tumblr founder and CEO David Karp, according to All Things D, which should be fun … Read more

Tumblr for iOS launching next week

Tumblr will offer the Apple contingent of its 57 million users a version native to iOS starting next week.

Speaking at the F.ounders conference in New York, Tumblr founder David Karp said the iOS version would be as "incredible" as the Android version, and include advertising. "We have two or three ad spots already designed and ready to go into circulation," Karp said.

In describing the user base and content, Karp said that Tumblr has "incredibly flat distribution," with the top 250 blogs representing only 4 percent of the total traffic on … Read more

Tumblr president quits amid questions about experience

Social network Tumblr is in need of a new president.

John Maloney, who served as president for the past four years, resigned this past weekend, according to the Wall Street Journal.

"People familiar with the situation" told the Journal that Maloney's skills as a general manager became less relevant as the company increased in size to 100 employees and brought other department executives into the fold.

Maloney himself seemed to concede his lack of prowess in running a large company, even telling the board earlier this year that he was thinking of leaving.

"I am a … Read more

Tumblr CEO says displaying ads 'complete last resort'

It's no secret Tumblr is big and growing, but now, the time has come for the company to start generating some cash. Just don't expect ads to play a role in that.

Speaking to AdAge in an interview published today, Tumblr CEO David Karp made it abundantly clear that his company has no interest in placing ads on its service, saying that the microblogging tool is "selling our desks to avoid that, it's a complete last resort."

Still, the temptation to bring ads to Tumblr, which has yet to effectively monetize its growth, might be … Read more

Tumblr takes a morning stumble

For quite some time I've been playing with Tumblr, the latest darling of the New York tech scene.

Tumblr (earlier coverage here), founded by 21-year-old David Karp, has been making headlines because of its interesting not-quite-a-blog-platform format and its big-name investors: Union Square Ventures, Spark Capital, Next New Networks co-founder Fred Seibert, and Vimeo founder Jakob Lodwick. (Lodwick recently started a Tumblr blog with his girlfriend, Star magazine editor-at-large Julia Allison, and everyone around the Alley likes to pretend they don't read it.)

I like Tumblr. I think it could be a whole lot more "social," … Read more
