January is a time of renewal. It also happens to be when appliance makers show off their visions of what is to come. The event is CES 2013 and this year, according to those that make kitchen gadgets and appliances, everything is going to be very, very smart. While we have been promised automated kitchens in one form or another since the time of the Jetsons, there is one important factor in the modern world that may see the smart kitchen finally grow up: mobility.

The microwave doesn't have a particularly great reputation for producing quality meals. Sometimes, this isn't necessarily even the fault of the appliance. Cooks of any and all levels attack the box, subjecting it to creations both good and bad alike. While many a recipe of dubious heritage has gleaned the inner walls of microwaves everywhere, it is not uncommon for the microwave to be used for great cooking. It's just a matter of users knowing what they are doing. Well, users or the microwave itself, that is.
Refrigerators are the one appliance that you want to get right. That's not to discount the range, the toaster oven, or even the can opener; it's just that an appliance that is on duty 24-7, it only makes sense. Of course, all of that on time is an energy drain, so it's extra important to be selective when faced with such a purchasing decision. Looking for Energy Star qualified appliances is one way to narrow down the playing field--while saving some cash in the long run.
Distinctive appliances in the kitchen lend a stylish appeal to the entire house. However, it is not only the amount of time we spend in and about our kitchens that make them a reflection of the whole home. "You are what you eat," they say, and by extension it could be said that how you prepare your meals shows who you are. (At least when it comes to personal style.)
Certain appliances are used so frequently they just blend into the background. This is a good thing. When heavy-use appliances integrate seamlessly into our lives, that means they are working as they should. It's best not to notice them, because that usually means something is wrong. But just because they blend into our surroundings, that doesn't mean we don't want them to be attractive when we do look at them. Considering how central the oven is to daily life, efficiency and design go hand in hand.

Getting dialed into your personal workspace is a fun and exciting challenge. When that space is the kitchen--specifically the oven--the resulting meals that emerge are like no others. Experience tells you if the oven runs hot or on the cool side, where the hot spots are, and even which burner burns better. Knowledgeable cooks in their own familiar kitchens are capable of producing anything. Trial and error gives way to familiarity, and understanding of the tools at hand gives way to delicious meals.
