Apple releases revised plans for its 'spaceship' headquarters

As Apple waits for the city of Cupertino, Calif., to give the final thumbs-up for the design of its new spaceshiplike headquarters, the company has been tinkering with the details.

Cupertino published the software giant's project update for the headquarters on the city Web site on Wednesday. Included in the documents are the project description, site and landscaping plans, floor plans, renderings, and a bicycle plan.

While a ton of information was submitted, it appears that the basic essentials haven't changed too much. The building still looks like a circular spaceship; in fact, many of the renderings in … Read more

Apple's 'spaceship' headquarters blasts off in 2016

Apple's "Spaceship" headquarters, which have been in the planning stages for years and were the brainchild of late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, will be open for business in 2016, the company says.

The news was announced today by CEO Tim Cook at Apple's annual shareholder meeting. He reported that Apple is currently working with the city to gain approval and hopes to break ground for the facility later this year.

Jobs laid out plans for his company's headquarters in 2011. The facility is expected to have four stories and span a whopping 2.8 million … Read more

Tim Cook to shareholders: It was the 'mother of all years'

CUPERTINO, Calif. -- Apple CEO Tim Cook tried to reassure shareholders today, saying that the company was disappointed by its falling stock price but also that Apple is committed to its long-term strategy.

The meeting itself, which took place here this morning, was business as usual.

As expected, shareholders voted to re-elect all eight of Apple's board members. That includes Andrea Jung, Apple's only female board member, who was forced to resign as the chief executive of Avon last year and now serves as a senior adviser for the beauty products company.

The stakes were a bit higher … Read more

Apple is doing some community outreach in Cupertino, Calif., to help clear a safe public-relations flight path for its new spaceship-styled campus in its hometown. The company recently sent some fliers to its neighbors with information on the upcoming facility and invited feedback.

Apple to build private restaurant to keep out snoopers

I know that people like to laugh at Apple's rather paranoid sense of security.

This is principally because people like to laugh and because Apple's sense of security is a fine source of laughter. You know, in a "Dr. Strangelove" kind of way.

So I am delighted beyond secrecy to tell you that on Tuesday the company received approval from the Cupertino Planning Commission to build a restaurant not far from the Apple campus -- a restaurant (or some would say cafeteria) that will be for staff only.

I am grateful to The Next Web for … Read more

The 404 962: Where we play the waiting game (podcast)

AT&T earns the "worst carrier in the world" award for the second year in a row, so it's a good thing I just signed up for two more years of service with this new iPhone 4S.

According to Consumer Reports, prepaid phone subscribers are actually the most satisfied with their service, but that's probably because their burner phones don't have the Internet access necessary to lodge a complaint.

On today's show, we'll look at how the other carriers compare to AT&T, dispel rumors of Shigeru Miyamoto's departure from Nintendo, put in our our bid for RickPerry.com, Jeff demonstrates My Xbox Live for the iPad, and we'll show some incredible listener-submitted contest submission videos!… Read more

Apple updates plans for 'spaceship' campus

Apple has submitted more detailed plans for the site of its second campus in Cupertino, Calif., and the city council posted the plans to its Web site today.

The new campus, which is located across town from the company's headquarters, was originally pitched to the council by the late Steve Jobs as resembling a "spaceship." The new plans give us a more detailed look at what the new campus will look like, complete with floor plans, walkways, and landscaping (beware that these PDFs are large).

The campus landscaping plans:

The package also includes stunning renderings of what … Read more

Jobs stumps for new 'spaceship'-like Apple campus

Apple is bursting at the seams with employees, and CEO Steve Jobs wants to build a new corporate campus in Cupertino, Calif., that will be dominated by a single "spaceship"-like building.

Jobs went before the Cupertino City Council this evening (see video of the meeting below) to present plans for development of a campus that will augment--not replace--its current campus at Infinite Loop Drive. Jobs said the current campus holds about 2,800 employees, but the company has 12,000 employees in the area.

"Apple is growing like a weed," Jobs told the City Council. "It's clear we need to build a new campus."

Apple purchased 98 acres from Hewlett-Packard last year on Pruneridge Avenue, adjacent to 50 acres the company purchased in 2006. Apple did not reveal the selling price, but real estate experts estimate it may have been $300 million or more, according to an AllThingsD report.

It's on that combined parcel of land that Apple plans to construct an enormous four-story, circular building in which 12,000 people will be employed, Jobs said.

"Think about that, that's rather odd, 12,000 people in one building," Jobs told the council. "We've seen these office parks with lots of buildings--and they get pretty boring pretty fast. So we'd like to do something better than that." … Read more
