Anthropologist: Apple is a religion

I am not sure that religions are really religions any more.

Fundraising and struggling for the attentions of the young have tended to force them into indecision between rigidity and compromise. Perhaps this is one reason why the real and the bedraggled have increasingly turned to material things in order to dedicate their beliefs.

There is something painfully unsurprising, therefore, in hearing that Dr. Kirsten Bell of the University of British Columbia believes that Apple is a cult-like religion.

Did it take deep analysis to discover this? Perhaps not. For ZDNet reports that she observed launch videos and actually went … Read more

Old-time hacktivists: Anonymous, you've crossed the line

In December 1998, a U.S.-based hacker group called Legions of the Underground declared cyberwar on Iraq and China and prepared to protest human rights abuses in those countries by disrupting their Internet access.

About a week later, a coalition of hackers from groups including Cult of the Dead Cow (cDc), L0pht, Chaos Computer Club in Germany, and hacker mags 2600 and Phrack issued a statement condemning the move. "We - the undersigned - strongly oppose any attempt to use the power of hacking to threaten to destroy the information infrastructure of a country, for any reason," … Read more

Report: Placards say white iPhone due in spring

Apple's long-overdue white iPhone will finally hit the market in the spring, at least according to new placards apparently popping up in Apple stores.

Nestled amid the fine print on the signs is a brief line noting that the white iPhone will be available in spring 2011, according to Apple-enthusiast site 9to5 Mac.

The placards may be confirmation of Apple's late-October promise that the white device will go on sale in the spring following a series of delays. At the time, Apple issued a statement saying, "We're sorry to disappoint customers waiting for the white iPhone … Read more

Cult Motorsports' 1,000-hp Challenger to stalk SEMA Show

Earlier, we featured the 470-horsepower Dodge Challenger SRT8 392, boasting more displacement and more power than the standard SRT8. But for pure bragging rights, the aftermarket can always do better. Enter the Cult Motorsports Challenger SRT8. This menacing custom, set to debut at the 2010 SEMA Show, has a look that borders on demonic and an estimated power output that you wouldn't believe.

Photographer Webb Bland of Not Bland Photography brings us the first look at the Cult Challenger. Details are slim, but the rumors circulating this matte-black beast point to an 8.3-liter blown V-8 replacing the standard … Read more

What does Facebook's cult insignia really signify?

Perhaps you, like the hallowed eyes and minds of CNET's Buzz Out Loud, were made uncomfortably moist by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's rather peculiar performance at the D8 conference.

Certainly, as he fretted and sweated, you wondered just what was really going through his mind and how many cold beers and compresses he might have needed to return to himself after such a difficult experience.

Perhaps the most open, most connected (on a human level), and certainly the most erotically charged moment of the interview was when Facebook's CEO removed his hoodie. This revealed a logo on … Read more

Andrew Keen and the piracy argument

I'm about three months late, but I finally got around to reading Andrew Keen's The Cult of the Amateur, in which he blames the current crop of Internet sites and users for eliminating the concept of expert knowledge, destroying the concept of intellectual property, and breaking down hundreds of years of Western culture. He even trots out the old "save the children" argument that we've been hearing since 1995--pornography, predators, and pedophiles, oh my! (People always seem to miss that fourth "p"--parental oversight.)

Keen has some valid points, unfortunately they're buried … Read more

Ultraman premonition comes true

It's not often that Crave gets freaked out, but we were a little thrown by this coincidence.

The other day we ran a small item about a small device, a robot USB key. Certainly nothing unusual about that, except for a random reference to Ultraman--a character we probably hadn't recalled more than two or three times since childhood. Then Saturday, only a few days after the robot USB item, what do we spy? An Ultraman USB key.

Fareastgizmos reports that the 256MB storage device is part of a 40th anniversary commorative set of collectibles dedicated to the … Read more
