Invasive crazy ants have a taste for technology

It sounds like an old black-and-white monster movie. Crazy, tech-nesting ants invade America! That would make for a great matinee, but it's oh so very real. Tawny crazy ants, known scientifically as Nylanderia fulva, are marching into territories once dominated by fire ants -- and they're not being very good neighbors.

While fire ants have made their sting notorious, tawny crazy ants have a propensity to infiltrate unwelcome places en masse. They're making fire ants look positively polite. The South American native ants are attracted to electronics in particular. Once inside, they create short circuits, says University of Texas research assistant Edward LeBrun.

"When they get electrocuted, they release an alarm pheromone," he says, adding that this attracts more ants and exacerbates the problem.… Read more

Bad breath? This robot girl will tell you straight

We've all known people who, let's face it, have a bit of a pong, and not the cool video game kind. The trouble is that no one wants to be the impolite person who lets them know about it. Well, two companies in Japan have designed a pair of robots that do it for you.

The robots, designed by robot manufacturer CrazyLabo in collaboration with the Kitakyushu National College of Technology, are in the shape of a girl's head and a rather lumpy-looking dog, and they can detect the aromas emanating from your breath and your socks, respectively.

The girl, called "Kaori-chan" (which means perfume or fragrance), analyzes a person's breath when they exhale into her open mouth (ew). A commercially available odor sensor quantifies the components on the breath and give it a rating on a scale of one to four: … Read more

Crazy Moto 3D 1.1 Review

If you were born to be wild, you might find some fun in this motorcycle game. However, the frustrating controls and mediocre graphics make it a tough sell. CrazyMoto 3D is reminiscent of a few other bike games you may remember, but it falls short of capturing the fun of those favorites.

If you were a fan of Road Rash in the 90's, you'll feel comfortable with this game. It offers the same premise of dodging traffic and attacking cops and cars with weapons you find on the road. Instead of racing other drivers, you're collecting coins … Read more

Crazy Photo Booth 2 Review

Increasingly, the iPhone and iPad are becoming go-to devices for taking, editing, and sharing photos. With powerful, built-in cameras and Internet connections, you don't need a second device or a computer to take photos and share them with friends on the go. Filter apps like Crazy Photo Booth 2 take this to the next level by providing multiple ways to transform or add effects to your photos. Is this particular app worth the download, however? It depends on what types of filters you need.

Crazy Photo Booth 2 is free and features the standard ad bars that are found … Read more

OkCupid app sets singles up on 'Crazy Blind Dates'

Think that going on a blind date is weird enough, how about one set up by a mathematical algorithm?

That's exactly what online dating site OkCupid is doing with the launch of its new app called "Crazy Blind Date." This app for both iPhone and Android uses mobile technology to set singles up in near real time.

"People will say that Crazy Blind Date is too crazy," OkCupid co-founder Sam Yagan said in a statement e-mailed to CNET. "But for a whole generation of young singles, it's going to be a great adventure, … Read more

Very limited driving game

Crazy Monster Truck Escape is a car race and chase game. The game is designed for Mac OS X, and the free version gives you limited gameplay. To get more, you pay for additional add-ins (three were available at press time for $1.99 each).

Crazy Monster Truck Escape lets you set the screen resolution (on some systems) and the graphics quality. Graphics quality is good at the highest levels but not stunning by any means. Gameplay is where Crazy Monster Truck Escape falls down. Essentially this is a throwback to the driving games of three decades ago. You use … Read more

An ingenious way to control a billboard with your iPhone

Though advertising is largely dead, sometimes people come up with wonderfully inventive things that make you stand and smile. Often, those people are in Sweden.

Here is just one wonderful example. It is for McDonald's. The bright minds behind this thought it would be, as the narrator of the video says, "extra fun" to have people stand around in a nice square, whip out their iPhones and play digital Pong on a large billboard.

If you managed to last 30 seconds without being defeated, you would get a coupon for something delicious at Ronald's house.

A Russian airplane out of control in flight?

I've tended to avoid Russian airlines over the years, even when I lived in Warsaw.

Perhaps it's irrational. Perhaps it didn't help when a tale emerged of a Russian flight in which a 15-year-old happened to be at the controls. It didn't end well.

So when I saw the video that I've embedded, my rational and emotional sides held a dogfight. Was this for real? Could this be excellent trick Russian photography? Was this another case of some rather interesting Russian aviation?

I searched around some of the more serious aviation sites to see what … Read more

Report: Elderly woman takes down Net in Georgia, Armenia

If you ever felt like invading the Republic of Georgia--this is something that several Russians have contemplated over the years--I may have stumbled upon a way to knock out most of the whole country's Internet service.

This is useful in these absurdly connected times.

My ruse might also work in Armenia. And, who knows, several other countries of the world. You see, all you have to do is send out one elderly woman and tell her to look for scrap metal with gay abandon.

I am not making this up. Unless Agence France-Presse is. You see, the AFP is reportingRead more
