Google's conversational search arrives with new Chrome

The "OK, Google" command isn't just for Glass anymore. People equipped with the newest version of Chrome now can use the line before speaking up to ask Google a question and can hear the answer spoken back.

Google demonstrated conversational search at Google I/O a week ago, a style of search designed to be more like natural human speech than the technically constructed search queries that people often use today to retrieve information from a search engine.

It's all part of the gradual arrival of Google's vision to build Star Trek-style search, in which … Read more

VidConvert for Mac 1.4.2 Review

The number of video conversion programs available makes choosing a good one difficult. Though it's basically functional, the lack of features and problematic setup make VidConvert for Mac a less desirable option.

VidConvert is available as a free trial version with a three-minute conversion time limit; the full, unrestricted program requires payment of $7.99. The program installs quickly. Unfortunately, after initiating the program, the user must complete an additional download from a separate site before conversion can take place. This second download requires Terminal operations, which is a lot to ask of all but the most experienced Mac … Read more

How to download Google Docs in older Office formats

Do you have a workplace or have to communicate with one that is still using an older format of Microsoft Office from 1997-2003? Well, if you spend a lot of time writing, sharing, or collaborating on documents through Google Docs, you're probably aware that Google has discontinued support for these older formats.

Option 1

Save your documents in any format and use an online converter. … Read more

Convert MS Word docs to e-books for free

The first time I heard someone say "Everybody has a book in them," I recommended that they see a doctor right away.

At least that explains all those books I've read that appear to have traveled through the author's colon. Writing can be painful, but there are limits.

Lots of people have unpublished novels and other book-length documents sitting forlornly on their hard drive, waiting and waiting for an audience. If your magnum opus (or even half-pint opus) is a Word document that's ready for the world to fall in love with, give the free … Read more

Twitter lets users toggle between see 'all' and 'no replies'

What do Steve Martin, Salman Rushdie, and Nascar all have in common? A new special feature on their Twitter accounts that lets followers decide whether to see their tweet conversations.

Twitter announced today that on certain verified accounts of well-known musicians, actors, athletes, and brands, users can decide whether to see back-and-forth exchanges. The way it works is by clicking "all" above the Tweets timeline on the user's profile page to see full conversations or by clicking "no replies" to see only original tweets.
